North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora was under fire for hiring someone who was accused of abusing student-athletes, leading to Tim Beckman’s resignation.

Well, that didn’t last very long.

After being brought aboard to be a volunteer assistant for the University of North Carolina football team, former Illinois head coach Tim Beckman has quit, according to a report at DailyTarheel.com.

“I appreciate the opportunity Coach Fedora gave me to stay connected to the sport and be around one of the best staffs in the country,” Beckman said in a statement. “His willingness to help a friend was a benefit both personally and professionally. I do not wish to be a further distraction to the team or University and I will no longer serve as a volunteer at UNC. I wish Larry and the program nothing but success going forward.”

From the very moment the hire was announced, Tar Heel Coach Larry Fedora came under fire from all angles. Beckman was fired from Illinois when it was revealed he mistreated his players after the school hired Franczek Radelet law firm out of Chicago to investigate claims.

“I don’t believe everything I read, all right,” Fedora said, according to the Raleigh News & Observer. “I know Tim. I know his side of the story, also. So I was comfortable with it. If I wouldn’t have been, obviously I wouldn’t have brought him. I wouldn’t have allowed him to be in our program.”

UNC has been under a microscope recently with charges of academic fraud dating back to earlier this year and the additional unwanted attention is not something the university needed. It is perceived as embarrassing to the university and an athletic department as well as Fedora, especially when he tried to justify bringing Beckman in.

UNC Chancellor Carol Folt made the following statement:

“When I first learned yesterday that Coach Larry Fedora had invited former Illinois head coach Tim Beckman to serve as a volunteer with the football program, I was surprised and disappointed,” Folt said in the statement. “The decision for Mr. Beckman to withdraw from his volunteer position was the right thing to do, and moving forward I don’t expect this situation to recur.”
