College Football Week 3 Results Against The Spread

I hope you all enjoyed your college football weekend! I have finally cleared my DVR of all of the football games my eyes could handle, and am ready to see how I did. It had to be better than last week.

Of course, that isn’t saying much. I am just 35-51 through the first two weeks. There really is no place to go but up!

How about those Bison! I took NDSU in that game, but of course, it wasn’t eligible for this column because no casinos were posting that line.

Here are the college football results against the spread from week 3. Here are my picks, in case you would like to follow along!
Thursday-Friday
Early Saturday
Saturday Afternoon
Saturday Evening

Winners against the spread will appear in BOLD. My result will follow the line.

Houston(-6.5) at Cincinnati: HIT! This game was much closer than the final indicated. I finally got my first pick of the week right! Things are looking up!

Baylor(-30.5) at Rice: MISS! I even hinted in the line that I should have taken Rice. I knew better….

Arkansas State at Utah State(-8.5): HIT! I still think that Arkansas State is the better team. They just need to play as a unit. The bad part is that makes their lines very hard to pick.

Arizona State(-19.5) at UTSA: MISS! UTSA always shows up against the Pac 12. If only they could do so against the Sun Belt….

Ohio at Tennessee(-27.5): MISS! The only thing that seems certain this year is that Tennessee can’t get out of their own way against inferior competition. Unfortunately for them, most of the SEC East is inferior competition.

Iowa State at TCU(-24.5): MISS! TCU has this covered, then they lost interest.

Akron at Marshall(-17.5): HIT! Akron was your super-dog this week. They won by 27, so that’s a 44 point swing!

New Mexico at Rutgers(-5.5): HIT! I don’t know if Rutgers looked like the better team at any point in this game, but something can be said for beating a team that went to a bowl game last year.

Middle Tennessee State(-6.5) at Bowling Green: HIT! The Falcons went from the class of the MAC to a team that is going to struggle to win four games.

Florida State(-1.5) at Louisville: MISS! Egg, meet face….

Temple at Penn State(-8.5): MISS! Of course, Penn State tried to get cute. They had control of the game, then became lucky to win it.

Kansas at Memphis(-20.5): MISS! Did I say that Kansas wasn’t devoid of talent? I didn’t mean that….

Georgia State at Wisconsin(-34.5): MISS! I knew better than this. I was clouded by the Badgers beating LSU, and covering last week. In a week in which the Big Ten(14) as a whole looked good, Iowa and Wisconsin sure looked bad.

Miami(FL)(-3.5) at Appalachian State: HIT! This could have easily been a trap game for Miami. Instead, they go in to Boone and never let this game be close.

Vanderbilt at Georgia Tech(-6.5): HIT! I’m kicking myself for not making this higher. I guess I expected the Vandy defense to show up. They didn’t make the trip down I-75.

Virginia at Connecticut(-4.5): MISS! Does only losing by three mean that UVA is back on track? Are we to that point yet?

Idaho at Washington State(-26.5): HIT! If the Cougars would quit stumbling out of the gate, they may actually get the Game Day crew to Pullman. Hey, there’s always next year! Yes, I had to channel my inner Cub fan to pull that out….

Florida Atlantic at Kansas State(-24.5): MISS! You could argue that the Wildcats are a dark horse to win the Big 12(10). They held their own in Palo Alto, then destroyed the Owls. That is better than anyone but Texas can claim for the conference.

UNLV at Central Michigan(-12.5): HIT! No letdown here. Nothing to see. Business as usual for CMU. That is, if your QB throwing six touchdown passes is usual.

Fresno State at Toledo(-17.5): HIT! Defense? Fresno don’t need no stinking defense! Actually, they have a stinking defense…….it’s seriously bad.

San Diego State(-10.5) at Northern Illinois: HIT! If Donnel Pumphrey is still an unknown to you, you don’t watch enough football. Tell your wife I said so.

Colorado at Michigan(-19.5): HIT! If Colorado QB Sefo Liufau had been able to finish the game, Michigan may have been finished. Their defense couldn’t stop the Colorado passing game with Liufau in there.

Oregon at Nebraska(-2.5): MISS! This was likely the best performance of Tommy Armstrong’s career at Nebraska. He didn’t make as many of the stupid mistakes that have plagued him nearly every game, and he played hurt when Nebraska needed him. That said, he was still only 17-33 passing with 200 yards. If he truly has turned a corner, the Huskers have a shot at winning the Big Ten(14) West.

Alabama(-10.5) at Mississippi: HIT! The Rebels have now blown two 21 point leads in three games to top five opponents. If they could have finished, they would be number one for the first time since the 1960’s.

Florida International(-1.5) at Massachusetts: MISS! UMass picked up their first win before the end of September. This program is improving. They have a pretty good offensive system in place there. Andrew Ford is picking up where Blake Frohnapfel left off.

Western Kentucky(-16.5) at Miami(OH): MISS! Great defense, boys. You were very lucky to come out with a win….

Pittsburgh at Oklahoma State(-4.5): MISS! This was a great game. Pitt is going to have nightmares about James Washington for a long, long time.

South Florida(-14.5) at Syracuse: HIT! The Bulls are not only Bowl-bound, but they are good enough to put a scare into the top of the AAC this year.

Boston College at Virginia Tech(-5.5): HIT! Nothing like covering by 43.5 points!

Western Michigan(-2.5) at Illinois: MISS! I have been a big supporter of Wes Lunt and the Illini defense, but it’s time to admit that Lunt is never going to turn that corner. The Illini defense may, but this game was never close. It’s not like they played well and then faded. This game was dominated by the Broncos from the opening kick.

New Mexico State at Kentucky(-21.5): HIT! This was a lot closer than I thought it would be.

East Carolina at South Carolina(-3.5): MISS! Philip Nelson had a great game. James Summers also had a good game. ECU is going to look back on this as a game they could have won.

Eastern Michigan(-2.5) at Charlotte: HIT! Eastern Michigan has two wins already! That matches their total from October 11, 2014 through the end of last season. Next up: the Wyoming team that was their only win last year.

Old Dominion at North Carolina State(-23.5): HIT! In other news, I am raking in the one pointers this week!

Louisiana-Monroe at Georgia Southern(-23.5): HIT! I knew this line was a little out of whack, but I never dreamed that Georgia Southern wouldn’t even score what they were favored by. They were very lucky to win.

Maryland(-9.5) at Central Florida: HIT! The Knights are already showing marked improvement from last year. Of course, winning one game did that. They aren’t all the way back yet, but they can at least stay competitive in most games.

Navy(-6.5) at Tulane: HIT! This was much, much closer than I thought it would be. I would have taken the -11 line, honestly.

South Alabama at Louisiana-Lafayette(-2.5): MISS! South Alabama is NOT who we thought they were, that’s for sure.

Louisiana Tech at Texas Tech(-10.5): HIT! This offense is fun to watch, isn’t it?

Troy at Southern Mississippi(-10.5): MISS! I was more worried about the half than the Eagles losing outright, but the result is the same.

Mississippi State at LSU(-14.5): HIT! LSU did everything they could to lose this game in the second half.

Texas A&M at Auburn(-3.5): HIT! Auburn is a better team since deciding on a quarterback, but they are still going to struggle in the SEC West.

Army(-3.5) at UTEP: HIT! Okay, Virginia Tech. Army sees your 43.5, and raises you five!

Ohio State(-1.5) at Chokelahoma: MISS! At least us fans don’t have the illusion that Oklahoma is good enough to make the playoffs this year. They were outplayed everywhere, especially on defense. Noah Brown had five career catches and no touchdowns entering this game. He now has ten career catches and four touchdowns, but none more spectacular than this!

Texas State at Arkansas(-30.5): MISS! I rally hate lines like that.

North Texas at Florida(-36.5): HIT! I’m glad Florida didn’t score 37, because they would have covered. North Texas had no chance against the defense. Florida won the game, but it cost them dearly. QB Luke Del Rio will miss at least the start of the SEC season, and possibly a lot more.

MIchigan State at Notre Dame(-6.5): HIT! Honestly, the Irish are lucky the game was this close. Michigan State didn’t score in the fourth quarter.

Georgia(-6.5) at Missouri: MISS! It was addition by subtraction for the Tigers losing Maty Mauk to Eastern Kentucky. Drew Lock is improving by the game.

Duke at Northwestern(-3.5): MISS! I never thought I would see a David Cutcliffe team get torched repeatedly the way Duke did in this one.

USC at Stanford(-8.5): HIT! It sure looks like the Cardinal can coast to the Pac 12 title, but will it be enough to get into the playoff?

Buffalo at Nevada(-10.5): MISS! I clearly didn’t take James Butler into account when I picked this one.

UCLA(-2.5) at BYU: MISS! Apparently, a four letter abbreviation is better than three. Who knew?

Utah(-13.5) at San Jose State: MISS! I knew better….

Texas(-6.5) at California: MISS! The Big 12(10) takes yet another one on the chin.

Hawaii at Arizona(-23.5): MISS! Unfortunately, the Arizona second stringers couldn’t keep Hawaii under the spread.

I had my first week above water on the college football season at 28-26 against the spread. That puts my season total at 63-77. I have to start somewhere! Now with  most of the conference seasons starting this weekend, I should have a better idea of what to expect, and how to pick it.

My points system didn’t fare as well. Season totals are in parentheses:

1. 6-5 (12-13) -1
2. 11-6 (21-22) -2
3. 5-8 (19-23) -12
4. 5-4 (9-11) -8
5. 1-3 (2-9) -35

That puts my weekly total at -4, bringing my season total to -58. If I can improve my five point picks, the ones that are supposed to be easy, I will crawl out of this hole quickly.

There are 52 FBS vs. FBS games this weekend. Stay tuned for those picks! At least I know that Oklahoma can’t lose this week!
