Rockies Tom Murphy Mile High Power: Waiver Wire Add

Tom Murphy was a September call up for the Rockies this season, and during his short time with the club, he has showcased his raw power. Should fantasy owners make him an add heading into championship week?

After nearly 30 weeks of action, those fantasy owners that are still alive now have their eyes on championship week. Fantasy owners know that this upcoming week will ultimately come down to who has the better matchups, and hotter players. With this in mind, could Rockies catcher, Tom Murphy, be the player that puts owners over the top?

Tom Murphy has a whopping 30 at bats in the majors this season after being promoted in September. All he has done with those at bats though, is post a, .300/5 HR/11 RBI/1.144 OPS line. Clearly his power is on full display, and fantasy owners are forced to take notice.

Murphy was the Rockies third round selection in 2012 out of Buffalo University. Entering the 2016 season, he was hovering right around the top-100 prospect in MLB, so the talent is there. He is 25-years-old, so while he is a little older than most of the top prospects, we should be seeing him now entering into his prime.

At AAA Alberquerque this season, Murphy was having a career best minor league season, posting a .327/19 HR/59 RBI/1.008 OPS line. He just missed his third straight 20+ HR season, but did notch his third 25+ 2B campaign. He missed the 2014 season with injury, but has produced when he has been healthy, and shows the talent that should play very well for the Rockies moving forward.

Murphy certainly looks like the catcher of the future for the Rocks, but could give help fantasy owners instantly. He has the power to be a solid addition to those teams that are desperate for any C production. The C spot has been absolutely terrible this season in terms of fantasy value, making Murphy quite the intriguing add.

Murphy has the raw power, but like most power hitters, struggles with strikeouts. Owners should not expect a tremendous AVG next week, but that is not why you are adding him in the first place. The only hurdle standing in the way of Murphy’s value, is playing time. But, Colorado knows what they have in Nick Hundley, and starting Murphy the last week of the season allows them an extended look at what he can offer.

The positives for adding Murphy outweigh the negatives. In adding Murphy you are acquiring a power source off the wire at the weakest fantasy position, and an investment in the loaded Rockies lineup. The counting stats should be there, not to mention the RBI opportunities with the studs hitting in front of him.

The Rockies will have six games next week coming against the Giants and Dodgers away from Coors, and then the Brewers at home to close the season. He may lose a start to Hundley over that span, but his power potential is well worth the addition. Make the move and good luck!
