Giants Sergio Romo: The Closer to Own in the Final Week
By Bill Pivetz
The Giants are still playing for a Wild Card spot. In order to win every game in the final week, Sergio Romo looks to be the closer going forward and should be added.
The San Francisco Giants collapse after the All-Star break is one that will be remembered. Now, the team is trying to lock up a National League Wild Card spot. Manager Bruce Bochy looks to have a made a change in the bullpen for the final week. Sergio Romo has been the go-to closer and should be owned.
Romo’s fantasy value has dropped over the last couple of years. After recording 23 saves in 2014, he has recorded just five saves since then. He took a back seat to Santiago Casilla, who recorded 31 saves this season. After a stint with Hunter Strickland, Romo is back in the driver’s seat.
On the season, Romo has a 2.93 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 9.8 K/9. His 2.3 BB/9 is a career high, but he’s kept his WHIP down with the low amount of hits.

Romo missed most of April and all of May and June with a right flexor strain before returning on July 4.
He immediately went back into a set-up role and recorded his fifth hold of the season. He had 14 holds before getting his first save chance of the season.
Romo recorded his first save on Sept. 20. He pitched a scoreless inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He since has two more saves without allowing a run.
The Giants have a decent end to their schedule. They begin a six-game home stand beginning with the Colorado Rockies and finishing with the Dodgers. While both offenses can score runs, AT&T Park ranks 11th in runs and 29th in home runs, obviously a pitcher’s park.

For those fantasy owners still competing in the final week, Romo is a good waiver add. He is owned in just 23.2 percent of ESPN leagues. Most leagues use ERA and WHIP for two of their pitching stats. Relief pitchers help more than they hurt those categories. If you can add Romo, who isn’t allowing many baserunners, and still get some saves, that will win you a championship.
