College Football Results Against The Spread Week 8
I thought I had a decent week last week since I did well in Pick Em. Instead, I dropped even farther. I now sit at 156-202 on this college football season. We are right about at the halfway mark, including bowl games. I need to really pick well down the stretch just to finish at .500.

I had another good week in Pick Em, missing just one game. The game that I missed in Pick Em I got right against the spread. I hope this is a good omen. Any sign of the end of this losing streak is welcome right about now.
I am about to resort to Ouija boards, tarot cards, crystal balls, or any other type of future-seeing reference to break out of this funk.
Here are the results of all of the college football games in week 8 against the spread. Winners against the spread are in BOLD. My results will follow.
Here are the picks, in case you would like to follow along:
Thursday-Friday
Noon
Saturday Afternoon
Saturday Night
Miami(FL) at Virginia Tech(-5.5): MISS! I guess I let all of the road warriors in week 7 cloud my judgment here. At any rate, I should have known better.
Troy(-8.5) at South Alabama: HIT! I can live with a 1-1 start.
BYU at Boise State(-7.5): HIT! Even though it happened on Thursday, this was one of the better games of the week. It also featured one of the worst fakes of all time. See for yourself!
South Florida(-6.5) at Temple: MISS! That one hurt.
San Jose State at San Diego State(-23.5): MISS! So, the Aztecs showed up for a rivalry game. Good to know. It still didn’t help me any.
Oregon at California(-2.5): HIT! This may have been the best game of the weekend. It had thrills, spills, and even two overtime periods!
North Texas at Army(-18.5): HIT! I knew the spread looked high, but I didn’t expect the Mean Green to win outright. UNT is over .500 at this point in the season for the first time since 2013. They were 0-7 at this point last year.
Massachusetts at South Carolina(-20.5): HIT! The Gamecocks are lucky they didn’t lose this game with the defensive lapses they had in the fourth quarter.
Central Florida(-4.5) at Connecticut: MISS! The weather report was wrong, so I was as well. I should have taken UCF anyway.
Central Michigan at Toledo(-10.5): MISS! Note to self: The Rockets play well in the Glass Bowl.
Miami(OH) at Bowling Green(-2.5): MISS! Okay then. Back to obscurity with you, Bowling Green!
Indiana at Northwestern(-1.5): MISS! The Wildcat defense did a great job on Devine Redding in this one.
Wisconsin(-3.5) at Iowa: HIT! Easy money.
North Carolina State at Louisville(-19.5): MISS! Wouldn’t it be fun to see Clemson play in Louisville this year? The Cardinals have been dominant at home.
Oklahoma State(-23.5) at Kansas: MISS! It seems like eons since a half has gone my way….
Texas(-1.5) at Kansas State: HIT! I don’t know if this was good defense so much as plodding offenses.
Rutgers at Minnesota(-18.5): MISS! Hey, no fair! Rutgers changed quarterbacks! They should have done so a month ago….
Syracuse at Boston College(-4.5): HIT! Amba Etta-Tawo is a human highlight reel.
Ohio(-3.5) at Kent State: HIT! Who needs sleeping pills when you have Ohio vs. Kent?
Hawaii at Air Force(-16.5): HIT! This is a nice win for the Warriors. Hawaii has four wins before the end of October for the first time since 2011 when Bryant Moniz was under center.
Akron at Ball State(-3.5): HIT! Don’t look now, but Akron is just one win away from bowl eligibility for the second straight year.
Colorado at Stanford(-1.5): HIT! If only all lines were this easy. Don’t let it take anything away from this game though. It was as ugly as they come. It was Colorado’s first win against Stanford since 1990.
North Carolina(-10.5) at Virginia: HIT! The good Tarheel squad showed up for this one.
Memphis(-2.5) at Navy: HIT! Will Worth did his best Keenan Reynolds impersonation in this one.
Illinois at Michigan(-38.5): MISS! There goes my streak thanks to the garbage time touchdown and two point conversion. At least it wasn’t just the conversion that did it. That makes me feel marginally better.
Purdue at Nebraska(-23.5): MISS! Another ugly win for Nebraska. No wonder no one takes them seriously. They can change that this weekend.
TCU at West Virginia(-5.5): HIT! More easy money. I knew I should have put five on this bad boy! How about two dozen for the Mounties?
Idaho at Appalachian State(-21.5): HIT! I will try not to strain my shoulder patting myself on the back….
Buffalo at Northern Illinois(-22.5): HIT! Buffalo might be the worst team in FBS. Okay, sorry, Nevada is. I keep forgetting about them for obvious reasons.
Texas A&M at Alabama(-17.5): MISS! Even when A&M kept this close in the first three quarters, it never really felt like they were in it. I guess I deserve this.
Eastern Michigan at Western Michigan(-23.5): HIT! I was right, Eastern Michigan kept it right at two touchdowns. Do I get an extra point for that? Please! I need it!
Tulane at Tulsa(-10.5): HIT! It’s pretty bad when Tulsa gives up 27 and we say their defense held tough, but so it goes for defenses in the state of Oklahoma.
Utah at UCLA(-7.5): HIT! Those silly spectators went to the Rose Bowl for a football game and found themselves at a track meet. Of course, it was nothing compared to the nightcaps.
Middle Tennessee State at Missouri(-7.5): HIT! This was Missouri’s first loss to a group of five school since 2009. The teams combined for over 1,200 total yards and 96 points. Lightweights…..
Colorado State at UNLV(-2.5): HIT! More easy money! Cha-ching!
Charlotte at Marshall(-10.5): MISS! After the way Charlotte started this year, you have to consider their 3-5 mark a success.
Arkansas at Auburn(-10.5): MISS! I would put the SEC West up against any conference in college football, not just divisions. I’m not sure Alabama can navigate it unscathed, as great as they have been.
Oregon State at Washington(-36.5): HIT! Garbage time was kind to me in this one. Not that Washington was going to cover anyway.
Louisiana Tech(-17.5) at Florida International: HIT! This La Tech offense is sure fun to watch, even without Kenneth Dixon.
Old Dominion at Western Kentucky(-13.5): HIT! The Hilltopper offense is finally getting comfortable with QB Mike White. They are one of those teams that could shock a power five opponent if given the chance.
UTEP at UTSA(-9.5): MISS! You know, I’m not even upset that I missed this. I’m also glad that I got to watch it. This could have been the best game of the season. How about a QB throwing his sixth touchdown pass in the fifth overtime? Yeah, I know. Lightweights…..
East Carolina at Cincinnati(-2.5): MISS! I knew better….
Houston(-21.5) at SMU: MISS! That is two lackluster losses for the Cougars. They not only knocked themselves out of the playoff conversation, but they are taking the entire Big 12(10) along with them. That’s what they get for not including them in the conference, I guess.
Louisiana-Lafayette(-5.5) at Texas State: MISS! Good grief.
Michigan State(-2.5) at Maryland: HIT! Peyton Hills did play, so I flipped. Good thing I did….
Mississippi State(-3.5) at Kentucky: MISS! In other news, the SEC West is trying to trade Mississippi State to the East for Tennessee and Auburn’s three backup quarterbacks.
Oklahoma(-13.5) at Texas Tech: MISS! Okay, where do I even start? Baker Mayfield set an Oklahoma record with seven touchdown passes. Not to be outdone, Patrick Mahomes tied the NCAA record for passing yards in a game (734), and set the record for all-purpose yards in a game (800). The two teams combined for a record 1,708 yards of total offense. No Samaje Perine? No problem. Joe Mixon became just the third player in the last 20 years with more than 250 rushing yards and 100 receiving yards in the same game. Dede Westbrook’s 202 receiving yards looked pedestrian to the rest of the video game numbers in this one. That my friends, is why everyone else are lightweights.
Georgia Southern(-13.5) at New Mexico State: MISS! Blah.
Ohio State(-19.5) at Penn State: HIT! I didn’t expect an outright win, but this is a good sign that Penn State is back.
Mississippi at LSU(-7.5): MISS! I forgot what a healthy Leonard Fournette looks like. Obviously, otherwise, I wouldn’t have taken Ole Miss…..
Louisiana-Monroe at New Mexico(-17.5): HIT! I should have put more on this. It was 14-0 three minutes into the game, and the Lobos never looked back.
Washington State(-6.5) at Arizona State: MISS! If only the Cougar defense would have decided to play the fourth quarter…..
Fresno State at Utah State(-16.5): HIT! It was close. I guess that’s why it was a one point game.
Wyoming(-6.5) at Nevada: HIT! Wyoming is 5-2 for the first time since 2011. They finished that year 8-5 with a loss to Temple in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. Hey, they will take a bowl berth right now. It’s been a long six years!
Exactly half of the road teams won against the spread this week, so it was a good thing I didn’t just take the road teams. I actually ended up 30-24 this week. While that is nothing to brag about, it is a key step towards getting back to even. I still sit at 186-226 on the season, so I still have my work cut out for me. It still feels good to be back on the winning side of things. That has only happened once before in this college football season.
Now let’s check the points. I have a big hole to dig myself out of there as well. The season totals are in parentheses:
1. 12-3 (37-32) +5
2. 8-11 (71-74) -6
3. 5-6 (42-76) -102
4. 3-4 (26-27) -4
5. 2-0 (10-17) -35
I only gained six points this week since all of my big wins were one pointers. Maybe I need to put five points on all of the ones I would normally put one on? Who knows. At any rate, I am still down 142 points on the year and -19 since the beginning of last season. My spirits are up a little, but I realize this is a minor win. I need to keep it going. There are 52 more games this week, so follow me on my trek back towards respectability!
