College Football Results Against The Spread Week 7

Most of the college football games I watched came out favorably, I think. Then again, I thought I was going to have a good week last week and I still ended up 26-28. My season total sits at 135-170. That is a big hole, but I have plans to get out of it!

More from College Football Odds

I had another good week in Pick Em, picking up 47 points. I have gained 97 points in two weeks. Let’s see if that success can translate to the spread picks as well. It didn’t last week for the most part.

I still have roughly 350 against the spread picks to make on the season. On average, I need to pick about seven games over .500 for the week to get me back to 50%. Hey, even the experts who pick and choose which spread picks they make only hit around 60-65 percent of their picks. They make ten a week at the most. I make them all!

Here are the results for week 7 of the college football season. Winners against the spread will be in BOLD. My result will follow. Just in case you would like to follow along:

Appalachian State(-9.5) at Louisiana-Lafayette: HIT! I’m off to a good start! Of course, it helps that this was essentially a gimme pick.

Duke at Louisville(-34.5): MISS! So, my question is would Louisville still be favored against everyone but Bama and Ohio State after this “performance?” I’m gonna go with no…..

Memphis(-11.5) at Tulane: MISS! That last touchdown with Tulane out of it anyway got me.

San Diego State(-17.5) at Fresno State: MISS! This was a dominating win for the Aztecs, but they still didn’t cover.

Mississippi State at BYU(-7.5): HIT! This was a great game! It set us up for a good Saturday as well!

Kansas State at Oklahoma(-10.5): HIT! Dede Westbrook may end up being as good as Sterling Shepard after all.

Vanderbilt at Georgia(-14.5): MISS! Note to Georgia: be careful what you wish for. Mark Richt has Miami relevant, and even had them in the top ten at one point this year. Georgia will struggle to make a bowl.

North Carolina State at Clemson(-17.5): MISS! I knew better. The Wolfpack were the last unranked team to take down Clemson. They should have done it again. NC State missed three field goals, including a game winner from 33 yards at the end of regulation.

Minnesota at Maryland(-6.5): MISS! What did we learn here? That Minnesota has a better backup QB than Maryland.

Iowa(-12.5) at Purdue: MISS! I want to thank the Boilermakers for trying to make me right. They scored 21 fourth quarter points. David Blough threw for 458 yards on that Iowa defense. Food for thought…..

West Virginia at Texas Tech(EVEN): MISS! West Virginia is the unicorn of the Big 12(10): they have a defense!

Illinois(-6.5) at Rutgers: HIT! They should have a Toilet Bowl for Power Five doormats at the end of the season. This year: Rutgers vs. Kansas. Trust me, people will watch. It’s football.

Georgia Southern at Georgia Tech(-10.5): MISS! The half got me, but not the way I was worried about.

Pittsburgh(-3.5) at Virginia: HIT! Does this mean I trust Pitt again? Not a chance.

Eastern Michigan at Ohio(-6.5): HIT! They are partying like its 1995 in Ypsilanti. The Eagles are one win away from bowl eligibility!

Kent State at Miami(OH)(EVEN): MISS! Kent’s defense disappeared at the end of this one.

Western Kentucky at Middle Tennessee State(-2.5): MISS! I knew this was going to be a wild game, but even I couldn’t have predicted that the Hilltoppers would win because of a missed extra point in the second overtime.

Wake Forest at Florida State(-21.5): HIT! Don’t look now, but these teams have the same record. That’s right. Wake is on the doorstep of bowl berth.

Western Michigan(-11.5) at Akron: HIT! There is nothing quite like losing 41-0 on your home field. It happened to me in high school. Repeatedly.

Ball State(-10.5) at Buffalo: MISS! Oh, that stupid half….

Bowling Green at Toledo(-31.5): HIT! It’s about time Bowling Green woke up. If they win out, they can still make a bowl game!

Central Michigan(-2.5) at Northern Illinois: HIT! This was a wild game, including a scoreless overtime, which you rarely see.

Louisiana Tech(-14.5) at Massachusetts: HIT! So the Bulldogs came up one point short of doubling this line. You got my point.

Kansas at Baylor(-34.5): MISS! Lost in the midst of this 42 point crushing is the fact that Baylor QB Seth Russell only completed 9-22 passes for 144 yards against one of the worst defenses on the planet. That has to be a concern.

Alabama(-12.5) at Tennessee: HIT! It seems as though I underestimated the Tide. So did most experts. But unlike them, I still took Bama to cover, and I would have taken them at -20 as well.

USC(-9.5) at Arizona: MISS! Where did that come from?

New Mexico at Air Force(-14.5): MISS! This is where I kick myself this week. I knew better. I didn’t expect an outright win for the Lobos, but I should have.

Nebraska(-3.5) at Indiana: HIT! Well, Nebraska certainly made this interesting after going up 17-0 early. The could have just as easily lost this game.

North Carolina at Miami(FL)(-6.5): MISS! North Carolina is one of those teams that I hate picking. There is no in between with them. They are either really good like here, or really bad like against Georgia and Virginia Tech.

Northwestern at Michigan State(-6.5): HIT! I thought this line was a tad off, and I kind of thought Northwestern had a good chance at winning. I didn’t expect them to embarrass Sparty at home though.

Georgia State at Troy(-16.5): HIT! Troy still controlled this game, but the Panthers wouldn’t go away.

Virginia Tech(-19.5) at Syracuse: MISS! The Orange not only didn’t get covered, they dominated this game.

Missouri at Florida(-12.5): HIT! What is this? Two straight home teams beating the spread? The week of road warriors may be coming to an end.

Utah(-9.5) at Oregon State: MISS! Can you imagine what Utah would look like if they could consistently move the ball? Of course, it only matter to us who bet against the spread. The Utes are 6-1 on the season.

New Mexico State at Idaho(-4.5): MISS! I can infer from this result that Idaho is better than Kentucky. Seriously though, the Vandals already have four wins, and two of their losses were against Washington and Washington State. This is the first time they have won four games by this point in the season since 2009, when they went to the Humanitarian Bowl and won it. This was the first time that Idaho had scored 50 in a game since November 15, 2003. The world didn’t have the iPhone, Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram back then. How did we survive? All our phones did was call people….

Florida International(-5.5) at Charlotte: MISS! Ugh. FU FIU!

Florida Atlantic at Marshall(-11.5): MISS! There was a reason I only put one point on this one.

UTSA(-3.5) at Rice: MISS! UTSA controlled this game, but still only won by one point. That is just my luck so far this year.

Mississippi(-7.5) at Arkansas: MISS! This one surprised me a little. Mostly because of the big plays that the Ole Miss defense gave up.

Texas State at Louisiana-Monroe(-7.5): HIT! The Bobcats comeback fell just short, but it did get me in the win column for the night games.

South Alabama at Arkansas State(-4.5): MISS! The Jaguars remain one of the toughest teams to pick. A truly evil thing would be for them to play North Carolina.

Connecticut at South Florida(-19.5): HIT! The flurry of fourth quarter points by the Bulls had me sweating this one!

Tulsa at Houston(-21.5): HIT! This was much closer than I thought it would be. And yes, I am a little torqued that Tulsa played Houston better than Oklahoma did.

Iowa State at Texas(-13.5): MISS! That Texas defense ate the Cyclones alive in the second half.

Southern Mississippi at LSU(-24.5): HIT! It took a third quarter explosion by the Bayou Bengals to make me comfortable with my pick, though I was fairly certain it would happen at some point.

Stanford at Notre Dame(-2.5): MISS! How bad are the Irish? They lose to a Cardinal team with a beleaguered defense and an offense that was missing their only real weapon in Christian McCaffrey.

Temple at Central Florida(-3.5): MISS! How was I to know that the UCF offense would go M.I.A. at halftime?

Arizona State at Colorado(-12.5): MISS! That’s what I get for doubting the Ralphies. This was total domination.

Ohio State(-10.5) at Wisconsin: HIT! Well, the Badgers got moral (spread) victories against Michigan and Ohio State, but will have a hard time making the Rose Bowl on moral victories alone.

Colorado State at Boise State(-28.5): HIT! I was honestly expecting a better showing from the Broncos, but it only proves my statements.

UCLA at Washington State(-6.5): MISS! Well, my Wazzu hurts from all of the stupid halves that didn’t go my way this week. Not one of them did.

Nevada at San Jose State(-2.5): MISS! The Nevada boycott is on!

UNLV at Hawaii(-8.5): MISS! You may or may not find me on the floor in a fetal position mumbling something like “please don’t make me pick any more Mountain West games.”

33 of the 53 road teams won against the spread. I went 21-32 against the spread this week. So if I would have picked all of the road teams, I would have finished 12 games better. It has been one of those years.

The points system came out a little better, but I still got destroyed on my three point picks. I lay more bricks on open threes than Kobe Bryant last year.

Let’s check the points anyway, for the sake of curiosity. The season totals are in parentheses.

1. 2-6 (25-29) -4
2. 10-11 (63-63) 0
3. 3-12 (37-70) -99
4. 4-2 (23-23) 0
5. 2-1 (8-17) -45

That puts me at -20 on the week and -148 on the season. That also puts me at -25 over the last two years. It has been a rough, humbling season. I don’t even really know what to say at this point. My optimism is dwindling. But I will keep plugging away. I can’t let it end like this. 156-202 is a tough pill to swallow.
