Lucifer celebrates Halloween with “Monster.” What happens when Lucifer struggles in the wake of Uriel’s death?

There’s a wedding taking place in a cemetery in Los Angeles. Naturally, it’s zombie-themed and everyone is dressed in their zombie finest. All of a sudden a shot rings out and the groom gets hit in the arm and then the bride gets shot in the chest and falls to the ground, dead.

Lucifer is in the middle of a drinking binge to get over the pain of his brother’s death.  He goes from woman to woman, drink to drink. Dr. Martin shows up because Lucifer missed his appointment. He says he has family drama—his brother died. She immediately thinks of Amenadiel, but he says it was another brother. She says cancelling meetings is a classic call for help, but he says he’s fine and sends her away.

Chloe is putting up Halloween decorations when she hears Trixie and Maze laughing. She goes inside to find Trixie on Maze’s sex swing. Chloe sends Trixie away and tells Maze that she is now living with a child and she has to start thinking about things that she does. Perhaps it wasn’t such a great idea for these two to live together. Chloe gets a call and hurries to the latest crime scene.

Dan meets Chloe at the altar where the bride, Peggy, is dead. She was a makeup artist. The groom was shot in the arm and they reason that perhaps he wasn’t the intended target considering that the bride was taken out with a clean shot.

While Chloe talks to the groom, Lucifer stumbles in. He cuts himself a piece of devil’s food cake and Chloe hurries over to the reception tent and admonishes Lucifer for showing up looking like a homeless magician. She goes to talk to more witnesses so Lucifer chats up the bridesmaids.

One of them admits that she wanted to ruin Peggy’s wedding because Peggy is so darn perfect. She called Peggy’s ex-boyfriend Jason and hoped he would cause some problems, but she had no idea he’d kill her. Lucifer thanks her by leaning in for a big kiss, which Chloe stops immediately.

Back at the station, Dan asks to speak to Chloe alone. They’ve both noticed something wrong with Lucifer, but while Chloe is worried about him, Dan would have no trouble if she sends him home. Meanwhile, Dan has Jason in the interrogation room for her. Lucifer spots him first and goes inside, snapping the doorknobs. “Hello bad guy,” he drawls.

Lucifer sits at the table while Jason cowers in the corner, crying. Dan and Chloe demand that Lucifer open the door. He complies, and he tells Chloe that Jason didn’t do anything. He was so upset seeing Peggy so happy that he left with the musician who had a guitar case. Chloe suspects that the gunman may have had his gun in the guitar case. She chews Lucifer out and warns him not to continue this line of behavior or she’ll kick him off the case.

Charlotte finds Amenadiel at Lucifer’s bar. She knows he’s grieving, and he’s blaming himself because of his lost powers. She knows that it’s hard to understand, but his powers might not be gone for good.

Lucifer, Chloe, and Dan take a look at the spot where the shooter may have been camped out. There was a napkin from Freddy’s Dutch Oven there, so it’s possible the shooter ate there earlier. Lucifer uses the Freddy’s Dutch Oven app to find the van. They go to the spot where the van is parked and Chloe asks the owner some questions. Freddy wasn’t there in the morning, but his assistant says a man was there looking for him.

Suddenly a shot rings out and hits Freddy. Chloe spots him on the roof and gives chase, but he’s gone. Lucifer catches up with her and she realizes that he went to kill Freddy first but he wasn’t there, so he ended up going to the wedding first. Chloe wonders who’s next.

Lucifer struggles with the vending machine when Chloe comes in with the ballistics report. Peggy and Freddy don’t have anything in common. Lucifer breaks open the machine and grabs what he wants, leaving a $100 bill inside.

Chloe gets a call from Trixie asking if Maze could take her trick-or-treating. Maze scared the babysitter away and no one is there to take her. Maze agrees, but when Trixie comes out in her princess costume, frowning, Maze asks what she really wants to be. Trixie smiles.

Lucifer has disappeared. Dan comes in and says he talked to Freddy’s wife. Chloe suspects that there is a connection between the spouses, and as it turns out Freddy’s wife is a doctor and Peggy’s husband is a lawyer who litigated a lot of her hospital’s malpractice cases. They go to the hospital and try to get the cases but they’re protected.

Chloe really wants to know what’s wrong with Lucifer but he doesn’t want to talk. He hugs Dan instead, then he stalks off and returns with the files. He borrowed Dan’s badge and gun, which makes both Dan and Chloe upset, and Lucifer points out that if he did what he wanted to do he’d punch Dan, so he does. Chloe kicks him off the case.

Chloe asks if Dan’s ok, and he says he’s not, but he suggests that maybe they should hang onto the files so they can track down the killer.

Charlotte and Amenadiel walk through the woods. Amenadiel is beating himself up over what happened. She reminds him of the times when he’d get in trouble to get their father’s attention. Amenadiel always took the blame. She suggests that he should be rewarded for always trying to do the right thing. They arrive at a tree. It’s where Lucifer buried Uriel.

Lucifer starts drinking heavily. He looks up and thinks he sees his brother, but he bumps into a woman and realizes it’s not him.

Chloe and Dan study the case files and realize that the killer’s wife might have been dying of lung disease. They find out that the culprit might be an ATF agent who specializes in long range guns. They raid his house and find out that he’s making fake badges. His latest one is for a pharmaceutical company.

Maze gets to experience trick-or-treating with Trixie. Trixie is dressed as the President of Mars, complete with margarita glass antennae. Maze glares at the homeowner until he starts handing out money to Trixie.

Trixie wishes that Maze had dressed up. Maze has her whip and she says she did bring something. She tells Trixie to turn around, and when she turns around Trixie looks up at Maze and grins. Maze has given herself a zombie look. Little does Trixie know, it isn’t a costume. Maze is really amazed at how accepting Trixie is. Trixie grabs Maze’s hand and leads her to the next house.

Lucifer takes out his frustration on the piano while Amenadiel looks at the grave and asks his mother why their father didn’t intervene. He breaks down as Lucifer kicks everyone out of Lux and leaves.

Dan and Chloe realize that the doctors involved in the agent’s wife’s case were married. When they arrive at the pharmaceutical company Dan stays with the husband while Chloe seeks out the wife. She spots her getting coffee out in the open. That’s when Lucifer shows up and starts demanding that the sniper shoot him. Chloe is able to figure out where he is and she captures him. Lucifer demands to know why the sniper didn’t shoot him. At the core of it, he wanted to be punished because he felt responsible for his wife’s death.

Chloe senses that Lucifer wants to be punished for something. He can’t talk about it because she’ll never understand. She hopes that he talks to someone.

When Chloe gets home, she finds candy wrappers everywhere and a horror movie on television. Maze and Trixie are curled up on the couch, Trixie snuggled up against Maze. She covers them with a blanket.
