The Kansas City Chiefs win a tight one against the Atlanta Falcons in the Georgia Dome on Sunday in Week 13, 29-28. Kansas City improves to 9-3 on the season, while Atlanta stumbles to 7-5 on the year.
This was a game that both teams could have won. Neither club really put its foot on the gas to win this one. What the game really came down to was Chiefs safety Eric Berry picking off Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan at two times late in halves.
Berry would pick-six Ryan near the end of the first half to give the Chiefs a 20-13 lead with a minute remaining before halftime. Ryan would lead a drive that would be capped off by an incredible 59-yard field goal by kicker Matt Bryant.
Kansas City would take a 27-16 lead over the Falcons before Atlanta mustered a comeback of its own. Atlanta would briefly take a 28-27 lead over the Chiefs on a Ryan touchdown passing to wide receiver Aldrick Robinson.
Falcons head coach Dan Quinn decided to go for two to make it a three-point lead over the Chiefs. He knew that he didn’t want to see Chiefs kicker Cairo Santos win the game on a field goal. What happened was so much worse.
Berry would jump in front of Ryan’s two-point passing attempt and take it to the house on a 99-yard return. Kansas City would win by the same score a few minutes later 29-28.
Three Stars
- Eric Berry: Berry starred in his hometown of Atlanta on Sunday. He picked off Ryan twice for eight points. Berry would have an additional two tackles on the very special day for the Kansas City star safety.
- Devonta Freeman: Freeman had an outstanding day in the Atlanta backfield. He had 15 carries for 56 yards and two rushing touchdowns. As a receiver, he would gather four catches for 49 yards.
- Travis Kelce: Kelce was a huge mismatch for the Falcons defense. He was too much for the Falcons to handle with eight catches for a game-high 140 yards.
