Northwestern vs. (23)Pittsburgh(-4.5) at New York, NY(3):
Pittsburgh(8-4, 5-3 ACC):
Wins: vs. Villanova(28-7), vs. Penn State(42-39), vs. Marshall(43-27), vs. Georgia Tech(37-34), at Virginia(45-31), at Clemson(43-42), vs. Duke(56-14), vs. Syracuse(76-61)
Losses: at Oklahoma State(38-45), at North Carolina(36-37), vs. Virginia Tech(36-39), at Miami(FL)(28-51)
Record vs. bowl teams: 3-4
Pitt is the only team in recent memory to beat two teams that were in the top five at the end of the regular season (Penn State and Clemson). Pitt’s offense can hang with anyone, as shown by the last two games of the regular season when they scored 132 points. But they also give up quite a few points. Fortunately for Pitt, Northwestern is not known for scoring a bunch of points.
Northwestern(6-6, 5-4 Big Ten(14):
Wins: vs. Duke(24-13), at Iowa(38-31), at Michigan State(54-40), vs. Indiana(24-14), at Purdue(45-17), vs. Illinois(42-21)
Losses: vs. Western Michigan(21-22), vs. Illinois State(7-9), vs. Nebraska(13-24), at Ohio State(20-24), vs. Wisconsin(7-21), at Minnesota(12-29)
Record vs. bowl teams: 2-5
The Wildcats boast one of the worst losses for a bowl team in a 9-7 slugfest against Illinois State. Clayton Thorson and Justin Jackson are a good foundation for an offense though, and Austin Carr is tough to cover one on one. Northwestern has a solid defense, but Pitt will give them all they want.
Prediction:
Both of these teams were more pesky than consistent this year. Northwestern is one of those teams that doesn’t look like anything special, then they smack you in the mouth. That said, Pitt’s two wins against current top five teams says it all. They can beat anyone if they show up.
Pick: Pittsburgh
