Vanderbilt vs. North Carolina State(-5.5) at Shreveport, LA(4) :

Vanderbilt(6-6, 3-5 SEC)

Wins: vs. Middle Tennessee State(47-24), at Western Kentucky(31-30), at Georgia(17-16), vs. Tennessee State(35-17), vs. Mississippi(38-17), vs. Tennessee(45-34)

Losses: vs. South Carolina(10-13), at Georgia Tech(7-38), vs. Florida(6-13), at Kentucky(13-20), at Auburn(16-23), at Missouri(17-26)

Record vs. bowl teams: 5-5

Vanderbilt only played two teams that didn’t make it to the post season. One of those is FCS Tennessee State, who went 7-4 at the FCS level. They are tested, and the only team that they really struggled against was Georgia Tech. Vanderbilt it characterized by a good defense and an offense that slows you down. Almost the exact opposite of North Carolina State.

North Carolina State(6-6, 3-5 ACC):

Wins: vs. William And Mary(48-14), vs. Old Dominion(49-22), vs. Wake Forest(33-16), vs. Notre Dame(10-3), at Syracuse(35-20), at North Carolina(28-21)

Losses: at East Carolina(30-33), at Clemson(17-24), at Louisville(13-54), vs. Boston College(14-21), vs. Florida State(20-24), vs. Miami(FL)(13-27)

Record vs. bowl teams: 3-5

It took North Carolina State a bit to get going in conference play. They were a 36 yard field goal away from taking down number 2 Clemson. As good as Vandy’s schedule was top to bottom, they didn’t play anyone of that caliber. The Wolfpack did struggle with consistency, especially against good defenses.

Prediction:

This is Vanderbilt’s good defense against the running attack of North Carolina State. Matt Dayes can do all kinds of things. He started his career as a tight end, and ended up running for more than 1,200 yards this season. I expect a low scoring game, but I’m not sure how much Vanderbilt will be able to get in this game. I trust the NC State offense more, even against this defense.

Pick: North Carolina State
