Arkansas vs. Virginia Tech(-6.5) at Charlotte, NC(4)
Arkansas(7-5, 3-5 SEC):
Wins: vs. Louisiana Tech(21-20), at TCU(41-38), vs. Texas State(42-3), vs. Alcorn State(52-10), vs. Mississippi(34-30), vs. Florida(31-10), at Mississippi State(58-42)
Losses: vs. Texas A&M(24-45), vs. Alabama(30-49), at Auburn(3-56), vs. LSU(10-38), at Missouri(24-28)
Record vs. bowl teams: 4-4
The Piggies were cruising right along until A&M derailed them in October. Then they stumbled through the rest of the SEC West, getting embarrassed by Auburn and LSU in the process. Austin Allen is a solid passer, and Drew Morgan is a really good receiver, so they are always a threat. Rawleigh Williams had better numbers than you may realize. The defense struggled against good offenses, so all things considered, they could have drawn a worse matchup than this.
Virginia Tech(9-4, 6-3 ACC):
Wins: vs. Liberty(36-13), vs. Boston College(49-0), vs. East Carolina(54-17), at North Carolina(34-3), vs. Miami(FL)(37-16), at Pittsburgh(39-36), at Duke(24-21), at Notre Dame(34-31), vs. Virginia(52-10)
Losses: vs. Tennessee(24-45), at Syracuse(17-31), vs. Georgia Tech(20-30), vs. Clemson(35-42)
Record vs. bowl teams: 4-3
Jerod Evans and Isaiah Ford are a formidable 1-2 punch in the passing offense, but Virginia Tech’s inability to run the ball when they really needed to hurt them at times this year. The defense is solid, and it will need to be against Arkansas. They gave away a win against Tennessee because they couldn’t run the ball to save their defense. You can say the same against Clemson. Did they figure something out besides Evans running it?
Prediction:
The Hokies running woes make me a little bit nervous, but I definitely trust their defense more. They weren’t really blown out in any game. Virginia Tech will definitely need to take care of the ball better than they did against Tennessee or Syracuse, but they have done much better over the last month or so. The Virginia Tech defense is good enough to keep Arkansas from running off with this. I’m not sure I can say the same for the Arkansas D.
Pick: Virginia Tech
