Indiana vs. (19)Utah(-5.5) at Santa Clara, CA(4):
Indiana(6-6, 4-5 Big Ten(14):
Wins: at Florida International(34-13), vs. Ball State(30-20), vs. Michigan State(24-21), vs. Maryland(42-36), at Rutgers(33-27), vs. Purdue(26-24)
Losses: vs. Wake Forest(28-33), at Ohio State(17-38), vs. Nebraska(22-27), at Northwestern(14-24), vs. Penn State(31-45), at Michigan(10-20)
Record vs. bowl teams: 1-6
You know, for a team that is supposed to have a prolific offense, the Hoosiers sure didn’t score a lot of points. They only scored 40 points once (against Maryland). A big reason was because of turnovers. Richard Lagow there multiple interceptions in five games this season. I am a big fan of Devine Redding and Nick Westbrook, but they need more consistent quarterback play to hang against Utah.
Utah(8-4, 5-4 Pac 12):
Wins: vs. Southern Utah(24-0), vs. BYU(20-19), at San Jose State(34-17), vs. USC(31-27), vs. Arizona(36-23), at Oregon State(19-14), at UCLA(52-45), at Arizona State(49-26)
Losses: at California(23-28), vs. Washington(24-31), vs. Oregon(28-30), at Colorado(22-27)
Record vs. bowl teams: 2-2
The fluke loss on the last play against Oregon hurt. So did the loss to Cal. Utah was much more of an offensive threat with Troy Williams at QB and Joe Williams at RB. Their defense wasn’t as strong as usual, which kind of makes me think this could be a high scoring game.
Prediction:
Just because Utah’s defense wasn’t as dominant doesn’t mean that they were not opportunistic. They still forced turnovers, which was Indiana’s major issue this year. The Hoosiers would need nearly a perfect game from Richard Lagow to win this.
Pick: Utah
