Georgia vs. TCU(-2.5) at Memphis, TN(3):
Georgia(7-5, 4-4 SEC):
Wins: vs. North Carolina(33-24), vs. Nicholls State(26-24), at Missouri(28-27), at South Carolina(28-14), at Kentucky(27-24), vs. Auburn(13-7), vs. Louisiana-Lafayette(35-21)
Losses: at Mississippi(14-45), vs. Tennessee(31-34), vs. Vanderbilt(16-17), vs. Florida(10-24), vs. Georgia Tech(27-28)
Record vs. bowl teams: 5-4
The win against Auburn looks good, but both Sean White and Kamryn Pettway were out for the Tigers in that one. Georgia played a solid schedule, and there were definitely growing pains for freshman QB Jacob Eason. For the bowl game, Georgia should have both Sony Michel and Nick Chubb at full strength. Can their young defense stop the TCU offense though?
TCU(6-6, 4-5 Big 12(10):
Wins: vs. South Dakota State(59-41), vs. Iowa State(41-20), at SMU(33-3), at Kansas(24-23), at Baylor(62-22), at Texas(31-9)
Losses: vs. Arkansas(38-41), vs. Oklahoma(46-52), at West Virginia(10-34), vs. Texas Tech(24-27), vs. Oklahoma State(6-31), vs. Kansas State(6-30)
Record vs. bowl teams: 1-5
TCU was supposed to have a vaunted offense. Instead they were held to single digits in two of their last three games. The inconsistency and nagging injuries to Kenny Hill took a toll, but the lack of a strong running game really hurt. The defense was gouged many times this year as well. That is a big departure from the norm for a Gary Patterson defense. Did they get it shored up in time for bowl season?
Prediction:
Jacob Eason looked better down the stretch, and Georgia’s defense looks much better than TCU’s. If Georgia gets caught in a situation where they have to throw to keep up, it could be a problem for them, but considering TCU was handcuffed by both Oklahoma State and Kansas State, Georgia should be able to do the same. This game may not be close.
Pick: Georgia
