Nebraska vs. (21)Tennessee(-6.5) at Nashville, TN(1):
Nebraska(9-3, 6-3 Big Ten(14):
Wins: vs. Fresno State(43-10), vs. Wyoming(52-17), vs. Oregon(35-32), at Northwestern(24-13), vs. Illinois(31-16), at Indiana(27-22), vs. Purdue(27-14), vs. Minnesota(24-17), vs. Maryland(28-7)
Losses: at Wisconsin(17-23), at Ohio State(3-62), at Iowa(10-40)
Record vs. bowl teams: 5-3
Nebraska won their way into the top ten before being knocked out by the Big Ten(14) elite. The team that takes the field in Nashville wont really resemble the one that Nebraska fans saw for much of the season. Ryker Fyfe, not Tommy Armstrong, will be under center due to Armstrong’s ailing hamstring. WR Jordan Westerkamp was injured in practice and will be unavailable. Nate Geary, the heart of the defense, was suspended for violation of team rules (not going to class). This seriously hurts their chances in what looked like a good matchup for Nebraska.
Tennessee(8-4, 4-4 SEC):
Wins: vs. Appalachian State(20-13), vs. Virginia Tech(45-24), vs. Ohio(28-19), vs. Florida(38-28), at Georgia(34-31), vs. Tennessee Tech(55-0), vs. Kentucky(49-36), vs. Missouri(63-37)
Losses: at Texas A&M(38-45), vs. Alabama(10-49), at South Carolina(21-24), at Vanderbilt(34-45)
Record vs. bowl teams: 6-4
Ten of Tennessee’s 12 games were against bowl teams. That makes them more tested than most teams out there. The loss to Vanderbilt was ugly, and this team seemed lost when running back Jalen Hurd up and left, but Josh Dobbs is still an elite athlete. That said, the Vols were a disappointment again this year. Do they really want to be in this game?
Prediction:
We have a team that failed to meet expectations in Tennessee and a Nebraska team that may have overachieved early in the year. Both came crashing down as the calendar hit November. Nebraska because of injuries and Tennessee because of internal issues. Nebraska is missing many key components here. Tennessee has underachieved in each of the last two years. Why is anyone’s guess. On paper, this looks like a huge mismatch. So why am I not confident in this at all? Nashville is a Vanderbilt town, and Nebraska has always traveled well. They beat a UCLA team in a bowl last year that they had no business beating. It could happen again.
Pick: Nebraska
