(4)Washington vs. (1)Alabama(-14.5) at Atlanta, GA(3):

Washington(12-1, 9-1 Pac 12):

Wins: vs. Rutgers(48-13), vs. Idaho(59-14), vs. Portland State(41-3), at Arizona(35-28), vs. Stanford(44-6), at Oregon(70-21), vs. Oregon State(41-17), at Utah(31-24), at California(66-27), vs. Arizona State(44-18), at Washington State(45-17), vs. Colorado(41-10)

Losses: at USC(13-26)

Record vs. bowl teams: 5-1

Washington really burst on the scene with a blowout win against Stanford with a national audience. This is a team with a really good defense, an electric back in Myles Gaskin, and a good passer and leader in Jake Browning. Anyone who followed the Huskies last year could see that these guys were going to be special with some seasoning. Most didn’t think it would come as soon as their sophomore year.

Alabama(13-0, 9-0 SEC):

Wins: vs. USC(52-6), vs. Western Kentucky(38-10), at Mississippi(48-43), vs. Kent State(48-0), vs. Kentucky(34-6), at Arkansas(49-30), at Tennessee(49-10), vs. Texas A&M(33-14), at LSU(10-0), vs. Mississippi State(51-3), vs. Chattanooga(31-3), vs. Auburn(30-12), vs. Florida(54-16)

Losses: NONE

Record vs. bowl teams: 10-0

The Bama juggernaut couldn’t be stopped. They beat the USC team that Washington lost to, but it was on a neutral site before USC figured out that Sam Darnold needed to be their starting quarterback. Would it have mattered? Probably not. This team actually looks better than last year’s team that also could not be stopped. I tend to think that the defense is not quite as good, but that’s like saying that Emma Stone isn’t as good looking as Megan Fox. If either one of them went home with you, you would be a happy guy.

Prediction:

I actually think Washington has the upper hand defensively in this game. Their offense is good enough to play with anyone. Only USC held them to under 30 points this season. I tend to think Bama will as well, but Washington’s defense is good enough to keep the Tide under that mark as well.

I expect a mostly defensive battle in the same vein as the Alabama-LSU game, except not as low scoring. Washington matches up better with Alabama on paper than the other two teams in the playoff. If someone is going to derail the Tide, it will be here. I think this game stays within single digits, but Bama will likely find a way to win.

Pick: Washington
