(14)Auburn vs. (7)Oklahoma(-2.5) at New Orleans, LA(5):
Auburn(8-4, 5-3 SEC):
Wins: vs. Arkansas State(51-14), vs. LSU(18-13), vs. Louisiana-Monroe(58-7), at Mississippi State(38-14), vs. Arkansas(56-3), at Mississippi(40-29), vs. Vanderbilt(23-16), vs. Alabama A&M(55-0)
Losses: vs. Clemson(13-19), vs. Texas A&M(16-29), at Georgia(7-13), at Alabama(12-30)
Record vs. bowl teams: 5-4
The Tigers will be remembered as the straw that broke Les Miles’s back. Auburn hit their stride once the team decided on quarterback Sean White. Jeremy Johnson still sees snaps in certain packages, and likely will against an Oklahoma team that struggles with mobile quarterbacks. Kamryn Pettway is a game changing back, but few realize that Kerryon Johnson had nearly as many carries at Pettway and gained nearly 900 yards. Johnson also scored 11 times to Pettway’s 7. Can this solid defense handle the high-powered Sooners offense?
Oklahoma(10-2, 9-0 Big 12(10):
Wins: vs. Louisiana-Monroe(59-17), at TCU(52-46), vs. Texas(45-40), vs. Kansas State(38-17), at Texas Tech(66-59), vs. Kansas(56-3), at Iowa State(34-24), vs. Baylor(45-24), at West Virginia(56-28), vs. Oklahoma State(38-20)
Losses: vs. Houston(23-33), vs. Ohio State(24-45)
Record vs. bowl teams: 5-2
The Oklahoma defense improved after the Texas Tech debacle, but they still wont be confused with a Mike Stoops best anytime soon. This was Oklahoma’s best chance at a title since 2003, but the opening loss on a “neutral” field in Houston destroyed that. And let’s be honest. If a team comes in and kicks you around your own house like Ohio State did, you don’t deserve a title shot. You need to at least put up a fight. That game was not as close as the score indicates.
That said, Oklahoma has possibly the best tandem of backs anywhere in Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon. Baker Mayfield could have won the Heisman with enough plugging from ESPN, and Dede Westbrook was possibly better than Sterling Shepard last year. This offense is nearly impossible to stop.
Prediction:
Something has to give here. Oklahoma has been notoriously bad in bowl games the last decade, with the only exception being the Sugar Bowl against Alabama in Trevor Knight’s freshman year. Auburn has lost seven of the last eight to top ten teams, with the exception being the Kick Six in the Iron Bowl. Which can show up on the National Stage tonight?
Oklahoma has by far the better offense. Auburn has by far the better defense. However, this line is way too low. Oklahoma was only held under 24 points once. That was in the sloppy opener against Houston. Auburn’s offense will look good in this game, but it will be more a product of the iffy Oklahoma defense. This could wind up being high scoring, but that favors the Sooners. I see a ten point win. The only out of conference foes they show up for anymore is the SEC.
