When news originally broke of this bizarre Derrick Rose story last night during the Knicks’ 110-96 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans, the internet demonstrated noticeable restraint. A perfect opportunity to pile onto a guy with a history like Rose’s was overtaken by patience, Twitter should be commending for pausing to understand the gravity of the situation.

Luckily for us, with the story more firmly laid out, the Knicks went ahead and started the (unintentional?) trolling themselves, officially ending NBA Twitter’s moment of silence. So, for any editors/writers/joke-makers/sad Knicks fans out there, any and all clownings are on the table now:

On second thought, maybe this was all part of a grand Knicks plan to supersede the embarrassment that Rose caused them last night, by directing all humor toward their own big gaffe. Because it really is hilarious to imagine that in the heat of his getaway, Rose stopped to purchase an Amtrak ticket and ride the train back home to Chicago.

The number one problem that seems to be unanswered in all of this is how Rose failed to communicate his intentions and circumstances properly to Knicks officials upon departure from Madison Square Garden. Imagining that failure in the context of an hours-long train ride is genuine comedy gold.

I really want it to be true that Rose was fiddling with his iPhone for an entire Amtrak ride, trying to hold it up in various crevices of the traincar for optimal Verizon coverage before realizing that the Southwest-bound train was not as ideal a spot for his goodbye email to the Knicks as he had hoped.

Yes, this is the Knicks continuing to out-Knicks themselves. They have deleted the tweet since, but the Internet never dies, and the Knicks have displayed savvy millennial-ship in fighting this battle online. Turn a meme into an ad, deflect attention, and let the fans in on the joke. Well played, People Trying to Save the Franchise From Phil Jackson (that’s what we’re calling Knicks employees now).
