The ending to the Phoenix Suns game against the Boston Celtics on Sunday night gave us an instant classic.

If you haven’t seen Tyler Ulis’ incredible step-back three to complete a breakneck comeback at the end of the Phoenix Suns game against the Boston Celtics, you should. If you’ve already seen it, you should watch it again. It’s hard to think of anything more fun than this. That is, if you’re into fun. Some people aren’t.

That was magical. A lot of very special, very abnormal things had to happen in order for this event to happen.

Isaiah Thomas, a 90 percent free throw shooter, had to miss his first of two freebies. He did that.

Eric Bledsoe had to get past Jae Crowder, an above average defender, and keep his body afloat and controlled for a difficult reverse. He did that too.

Marquese Chriss had to get in the way of an in-bounds pass with four seconds left to have it carom to free Tyler Ulis. Yep.

The chosen camera shots had to miss most of the preceding point to instill a sense of mystery and panic into the action. Why not?

And then Ulis had about a second and a half to gather his momentum and confidence to step back behind the three-point line and knock in a three while the buzzer sounded. Easy.

It’s still a bit difficult to process everything that just happened, even after watching it through about a dozen times. The Celtics have lost four of their last seven and continue to look a bit funky. For a team hoping to challenge for a higher seed, they’re picking a bad time to falter.

The Suns have won three in a row and look confusingly peppy. For a team that should be maybe racing to the bottom, they’ve appeared to hit an anti-pothole.

The narrative and direction don’t have to make sense to be awesome. This is proof. This is great.
