Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio is playing out of his mind. Here is his ridiculous 10th assist of the first quarter against Washington.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have played better of late. While they may miss the Western Conference Playoffs for yet another season, this young team is finally starting to jell under new head coach Tom Thibodeau.

One of the veterans on this young Timberwolves team is point guard Ricky Rubio. He’s never going to be an average shooter in this league, but the guy is one of the best distributors in basketball. Watch him thread the needle on this unbelievable bounce pass for a transition layup versus the Washington Wizards.

That transition dime was Rubio’s 10th of the first quarter, as the Timberwolves smoked the Wizards in that first frame. Ten first quarter assists is absolutely incredible. Doing it to a top-tier team in the East like Washington makes it all the more impressive.

This is what Rubio came to the NBA to do — humiliate basketball defenses with Maravichian passing skills. He’s never had the shooters to appropriately complement his savant-like distributing ability.

Since he can play defense, Rubio can now become that player for Thibodeau in Minnesota. Thibodeau preaches defense and not turning the ball over. Rubio has tremendous value in his system.

Minnesota will have to play near-perfect basketball to catch division rival Denver for the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference Playoffs race. The Timberwolves have not qualified for the Western Conference Playoffs since 2004.

Rubio has spent his entire NBA career in Minnesota, yet has not made it to the NBA Playoffs. They may avoid the Twin Cities for another season, but this team is definitely heading in the right direction. Even with Kris Dunn on the roster, perhaps Rubio is the point guard of the future in Minneapolis?
