NFL Rumors: Texans content starting Tom Savage at quarterback
Tom Savage might be the quarterback of the future for the Texans.
Tom Savage took over the starting quarterback position from Brock Osweiler last season amid a miserable run of games for Houston. While he didn’t wow a whole bunch of people with his play what he did do was lock up that starting spot before injury forced him back out. Now with Osweiler gone, it’s back to Savage as the starting quarterback for the Texans. Despite making the playoffs last year most people consider that a result of their painfully weak division. They did have the number one defense in the NFL, but Houston’s quarterback play was lacking the entire season and in need of an upgrade.
That’s why they’ve been linked to Tony Romo throughout his free agency process. The Cowboys have attempted to trade Romo, but if they can’t he’ll likely be released and the Texans are reportedly on his short list of teams’ he’d consider signing with. However, Houston doesn’t seem to be head over heels for the veteran quarterback. NFL Network’s James Palmer reported today that Houston would be content with Tom Savage starting next season.
Palmer said on air that Savage, taken in the 2013 NFL Draft, has been in the Houston system for a couple of years now and his lack of turnovers impressed the Texans front office and coaching staff. Had he not been injured they would have kept him as the starter into the playoffs and gotten even more of a look at him. Now, while Houston still probably wants Romo, they seem to be content with him being the starter.

Being content with your quarterback is one thing, but it would be nuts for the Texans to be all in on Savage if Romo is available. They had one of the top defenses in the NFL last year and are at a period where they can dominate an awful division. They need to make a move now for a good starting QB instead of sticking to the status quo and hoping Savage works out.
