Morris Claiborne is leaving the Cowboys and will reportedly sign with the Jets and replace Darrelle Revis.

Morris Claiborne is moving on to a new team after spending the first four seasons of his career with the Cowboys. It was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday that Claiborne is expected to sign with the Jets in the near future.

New York has been looking for young talent to improve their core after parting ways with many long time veterans. One of those veterans was cornerback Darrelle Revis. Most likely Claiborne will step in to take over the role Revis played.

Claiborne is coming off one of his best seasons as a pro. A reliable cover presence on an inconsistent Dallas defense, New York should have high expectations for what they bring in with Claiborne. Last year, the Jets lacked any consistency on either side of the ball and it’s a positive step in the right direction to start looking for players that can provide that. However, the Jets are going to need to find a way to win some games quick.

Claiborne isn’t old, but he’s 27 which means that he’s at the peak of his prime for an NFL corner. This is a position where players are known to fall off very quickly especially once they hit 30. How much longer Claiborne can continue playing at the level he played last season is unknown. It’s also possible that last year was his peak and it’s all downhill from here. Contract details aren’t out yet, but the longer the Jets have Claiborne the more likely he is to regress. They need to cash in on his talent as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, the Jets aren’t really in a position to cash in on talent. They’re ditching longterm veterans and getting younger which is good, but they still lack the pieces necessary to win a ton of games quickly. They also lack a good quarterback. Claiborne will play well in New York, but he might have to get used to losing.
