Nothing excites a bench like a walk-on scoring
Kansas head coach Bill Self’s son Tyler is a walk-on for the Jayhawks. He scarcely plays — he’s averaging 2.2 minutes in 10 appearances this season — but when he does Kansas fans and his teammates eagerly await him finding a way to put the ball in the basket.
Well, on Friday night, during the Jayhawks’ blowout win over UC Davis in the round of 64, Tyler Self delivered a deep 3-pointer that set off an exciting bench celebration:

These are always awesome moments. Watch as Kansas senior and National Player of the Year favorite Frank Mason jumps up and down for his teammate while Tyler’s dad simply offers a light applause from the bench. The best news is that Self will finally have another play to add to his highlight reel:
Self’s 3-pointer capped a career night for the senior who finished with five points in garbage time. That tops his previous career-high of three.
Self made his way into the game with plenty of time to go to work as the Jayhawks had built up a 40-point lead behind an array of slam dunks and hot shooting from behind the 3-point arc. Kansas was led by Frank Mason, who finished with 22 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Josh Jackson added 17 points and seven boards as well.

It’s good that Self made use of his time on the court in this one because the rest of the Jayhawks games don’t figure to offer him much of an opportunity to get on the floor. Kansas will play the winner of Miami-Michigan State on Sunday.
