Sad news for the New York Jets as the organization decides to hire Josh McCown at quarterback.

The New York Jets are continuing to shoot themselves in the foot. Today, they have apparently signed a quarterback so old that he qualifies for AARP. Josh McCown, formerly of the Cleveland Browns, has been handpicked by the Jets’ front office as their new field general. This rumor is just another addition for an up-and-coming paltry season for the Jets as a team and a fanbase (if you’re all still around.)

This is a questionable addition to the Jets’ depth chart. Not only is McCown approaching 38 years of age in July, but other – and younger – quarterbacks were still on the market. Colin Kaepernick and Chase Daniel, though both are unappealing in the short-term, could have made considerable contribution to the Jets passing offense. That passing offense, mind you, was always plagued with more interceptions than touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters (3rd – 6:2, 4th – 13:4).

Unfortunately for the Jets, their system of available quarterbacks isn’t something to gawk at. Bryce Petty, who started six games for the Jets last season, compiled a below average QB rating of 60 even. Hackenberg, on the other hand, has yet to experience a Sunday for the Todd Bowles-led crew from the AFC East. With that said, it leaves a wide opening for McCown to make an immediate impact.

McCown’s time with the Jets might be short-lived anyway. Over the course of his 14 or so NFL seasons, he has spent time with seven different organizations (Arizona, Chicago, Carolina, Cleveland, Detroit, Oakland, Tampa Bay). The numbers worsen throughout his career as a whole, as he has also managed to put up 79 touchdowns to 69 interceptions. And his targets at wide receiver could add to the depth of despair, since Brandon Marshall left and Eric Decker is questionable.
