Huge Adidas Fan Mocks Nike’s “Air Max Day” In Bubble-Bursting Video, Also Has A Point

The passion of the sneakerhead continues to truck forward at an astounding speed these days and there’s no better platform than social media to creatively take your shot.

In the most recent case, it was a shot at the Swoosh.

This past Sunday, Nike held its “Air Max Day.”  While many Nike loyalists were busy posting photos of their favorite pair of the storied running shoe, other people — like adidas fiend, Jemuel Wong — decided to go against the grain and challenge Nike’s apparent lack of innovation by mocking the entire “celebration.”

To succinctly summarize, Wong is most certainly not impressed with Nike’s “same thing every year” approach.

Specifically, the “same old air.”

Frankly, neither am I.

Although I do enjoy that the use of the pump in the video also takes what was probably an unintentional shot at Reebok Pumps.

I say unintentional because, at the moment, picking on Reebok is easier than dunking on Beetlejuice.

But anyway, here’s what Wong had to say about it.

From Sole Collector:

"“The intent is to counteract the recent Air Max Day campaign that Nike has worked so hard on,” Wong told Sole Collector via email. “I just find it incredibly ironic that they place such an emphasis on how great Nike Air is. I acknowledge Air’s rich history; but in my opinion, Nike has failed to bring out any significant improvement or collaborations to honor their flagship model. Seeing them bring out retros of their most coveted models just seems like such a desperate act to revive sales.“"

That last line pretty much sums up my take on Nike these days.

While I do love many of their retro releases — especially the Jordans — it sure as hell seems like that’s all they’re doing, as it’s become to go-to crutch to lean on for sales while companies like adidas close the gap with innovative concepts and designs.

For example, what in THE hell is this?

It’s the same old Air Max in a confusing disguise.

One of the first replies I got to that tweet was “this looks like it was designed by Sofia Vergara.” Hard to argue there.

Since you might be thinking this: No, the guy who posted the video does not work for adidas.

But yes, he does have an adidas tattoo on his hairy ankle, so take it as you will.

Nonetheless, he does have a legitimate point about the current state of affairs at Nike.

Sure, money is absolutely pouring in, but are we ever really seeing anything new?

“Get yourself a brand with a much richer history, a brand with much more than just Air.”

Touché, sir. Touché.
