With The Masters 2017 taking place this weekend, it’s a good time to look back at last year’s event from Augusta, Georgia.
There are few events in sports that are as storied as the Masters. Winning the event is the biggest accomplishment that a professional can have arguably. It’s the first major of every season and it’s a chance to make history and earn the beloved green jacket.
In 2016, quite the event unfolded before everyone in Augusta. The 2015 winner, Jordan Spieth, had played masterfully through three rounds and was well on his way to adding onto his legend with a win in 2016. Then back-to-back bogeys and a quadruple-bogey ended up creating one of the worst collapses in golf history.
Down five shots to Spieth at the time, Willett was able to take full advantage and play his best golf to win the Masters and earn the green jacket. Willett finished the tournament at five-under-par and showed incredible perseverance in the win.

This year, Willett should be one of the favorites again to take home the jacket. He’ll have some great competition however. Spieth is going to look for redemption on the course and Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson both will make strong pushes to be the one to wear the jacket.
Of course, no one can ever rule out anyone else either. If Willett proved anything last year, it’s that anyone can win the Masters and make their mark in history. Winning it two years in a row would make for an even better story.
