The Masters 2017: Notable pairings in first round

The 2017 Masters Tournament will be underway in Augusta National on Thursday morning. Here are some of the marquee pairings heading into Round 1.

It isn’t spring time until the azaleas are blooming in Augusta, Georgia in early April. That’s right, folks. It’s Masters week in the sports landscape. Golf enthusiasts and sports fans in general unite to witness one of the greatest tournaments in all of sports.

The 81st playing of the Masters Tournament begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. ET on Thursday, Apr. 6. There will be 32 pairings or triplets if we’re being totally honest here in the Masters. The last pairing featuring two-time Green Jacket winner Bubba Watson has a 2:03 p.m. ET.

Here are the most notable pairings in Round 1 of this year’s Masters:

Group 7, 9:06 a.m. ET: Zach Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen, Adam Hadwin
Group 12, 10:02 a.m. ET: Russell Knox, Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama
Group 14, 10:34 a.m. ET: Jordan Spieth, Martin Kaymer, Matthew Fitzpatrick
Group 15, 10:45 a.m. ET: Phil Mickelson, Rafael Cabrera-Bello, Si Woo Kim
Group 16, 10:56 a.m. ET: Brandt Snedeker, Justin Rose, Jason Day
Group 21, 11:51 a.m. ET: Jose Maria Olazabal, Ryan Moore, Webb Simpson
Group 22, 12:13 p.m. ET: Ernie Els, Jason Dufner, Bernd Wiesberger
Group 23, 12:24 p.m. ET: Danny Willett, Matt Kuchar, Chris Luck
Group 28, 1:19 p.m. ET: Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Shane Lowry
Group 30, 1:41 p.m. ET: Rory McIlroy, Hideto Tanhara, Jon Rahm
Group 32, 2:03 p.m. ET: Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Jimmy Walker

Zach Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen highlight some of the earlier pairings, as the bulk of the most notable ones come after 10:00 a.m. ET. Rickie Fowler has had his issues at Augusta National over the years. He and Hideki Matsuyama will be in Group 12 in Round 1.

2015 Masters Champion Jordan Spieth will be in Group 14. Three-time champion Phil Mickelson begins his quest for a fourth Green Jacket at 10:45 a.m. ET in Group 15. Last year’s winner Danny Willett will headline group Group 23.

A tournament favorite in Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy will be in one of the latter pairings. He is in Group 30 with a 1:41 p.m. ET tee time. Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson and another tournament hopeful in Dustin Johnson will be in Group 32.
