Richard Sherman rumors: Patriots not interested
By Conor Myles
Looks like the rumors of Richard Sherman heading to the Patriots are dead.
The latest around the NFL rumor mill was that the New England Patriots were looking to acquire star cornerback Richard Sherman from the Seattle Seahawks. For now that rumor has been completely shot down.
Mike Giardi of Comcast Sports Net in New England has reported that the Patriots have no interest in trading for Sherman and expect cornerback Malcolm Butler to sign his restricted free agent tender soon.
Sherman’s name has come up in trade talks ever since ex-GM and current analyst on the ringer, Mike Lombardi, mentioned that he believed Sherman could be obtained at the right price.
Seahawks general manager John Schneider did anything but dispel these rumors also. In an appearance on radio station 710 ESPN Seattle, Schneider confirmed the reports.
“What you’ve seen lately in the news is real,” Schneider said during an interview on the Brock and Salk Show Wednesday. “That’s on both sides.’’
Schneider also admitted it’s unlikely that a trade occurs this offseason involving Sherman, but again was adamant that the trade rumors are real and that they were listening for offers on their star cornerback.
The Seahawks have one less suitor in the Patriots, however, withNew England confident that Butler will sign his tender sooner rather than later with the lack of interest in his services.
Butler did meet with the New Orleans Saints this offseason, but the buzz around him has died down ever since. He’s reportedly not happy with the addition of new starting cornerback Stephon Gilmore or the recent trade rumors for Sherman, however, he seems to have come to terms that he’ll be apart of the Patriots in 2017.
We’ll see if a team makes a serious run at acquiring Sherman, especially with the NFL Draft right around the corner, but don’t count on the Patriots being that team.
