2015 AL Rookie of the Year Carlos Correa was hit by a pitch by Oakland Athletics pitcher Frankie Montas. The pitch collided with Correa’s hand and it was feared that there were broken bones in his hand. However, the X-rays came back negative after the game and it was found that it was just a hand contusion.
Since the Astros were out of position players in the game they had to put in pitcher Mike Fiers to pinch run for him. Correa ended his day at 0 for 3 with a walk. Including today’s game, Correa has gone 11 for 47 with one home run and three RBIs. He has also started all 12 games for the Astros this season at shortstop.
Correa was taken as the first overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft. Since then he has not disappointed the Houston Astros. For example, Correa’s RAA score last season was 35. This statistical computation means that Correa is a full 35 runs better than the average Major League Baseball player. Further, last season Correa racked up a 6.0 WAR which is categorically an All-Star ranking under the sabermetric scale.
The diagnoses of a hand contusion for Correa was best-case scenario for the Houston Astros and Correa himself. If he is forced to miss time, I would look for infielder Marwin Gonzalez to fill in for him in the meantime. Gonzalez has been a well-established utility player for the Houston Astros for the last couple seasons. So far on the season Gonzalez is hitting .231 with three home runs and six RBI’s.

The Astro’s can likely survive if Correa must miss a couple games because of this injury. If there had to be any time for this injury to happen it would have been early April. There is a silver lining here for the Astros fans. Also, the fact that there is not broken bones is another silver lining. No reasons to freak out here.
