Twins Robbie Grossman: Deep League Waiver Wire Add?
By Brad Kelly
Robbie Grossman is off to a hot start for the Twins this season. But, should fantasy owners be giving him a closer look off the waiver wire?
The Twins offense is not off to a great start, but that is no fault of Robbie Grossman. The former top prospect has been solid with the Twins since joining the team as a free agent in 2016. Even though he may have never ascended the way some scouts thought he would when he was rising the ranks with the Pirates and Astros, he has turned things around as of late.
But, is he worth a waiver wire add?
Grossman is one of the few Twins that are producing at the plate. He currently holds a .306/1 HR/8 RBI/.909 OPS line. Now, the counting stats and power do not jump off the page. But, how many would guess that he is in the top-5 in all of MLB in Walks and OPS?

It may be a surprise to some, but he did finish the 2016 season with a solid .280/11 HR/37 RBI/.828 OPS line. The Twins have been primarily using as their DH, as his switch-hitting ways provides flexibility. He is impressively batting nearly identical lines against both RHP, .300/.866 OPS, and LHP, .316/.974 OPS.
For those owners that may be scared off of a guy that presumably only offers AVG and OPS numbers, there are also encouraging signs in his batted ball profile. He currently posting 29% LD, 21% FB, 50% GB, 18% Soft, 42% Med and 40% Hard contact rates.
The first number that sticks out there, is the Hard contact rate. a 40% clip ranks him among the best in the game. Even though it is a small sample size, that is still an arrow that is pointing up. The one are that needs to be tweaked is his GB rate, His XBH ability is being hindered by that high of a clip, so the hope is that he reverts closer back to the 38% rate he had in 2016.

Robbie Grossman is not a fantasy game-changer nor will anyone their leagues. But, he is quietly a great OBP/OPS producer with solid underlying batted ball data, offering just the type of waiver wire adds that fantasy owners look for at this point of the season. Give him a look.
