Edmonton Oilers crowd sings Star-Spangled Banner (video)
18,000 Canadians belted out The Star-Spangled Banner when the singer’s mic cut out.
Edmonton Oilers fans at Rogers Place helped out the anthem singer Sunday night when his microphone malfunctioned, the whole crowd stepping up to provide a spectacular rendition of the American national anthem.
With the crowd buzzing before puck drop of game three in the Oilers’ second-round Stanley Cup Playoffs series with the Anaheim Ducks, the atmosphere was electric. Hoping to maintain the buzz, the singer with his guitar tried to do his job and sing the U.S. national anthem before letting the crowd take over for the Canadian anthem, but his dysfunctional mic prompted the fans to step in early.
Edmonton’s arena has been a loud sea of orange throughout the playoffs, spurring them to a first-round victory over the San Jose Sharks. Earlier in the playoffs, Oilers fans made waves across the NHL for singing their own national anthem, with singer Robert Clark leading the crowd from the stands.
This isn’t the first time Canadian NHL fans have helped out their American neighbors with the anthem. In 2014, the crowd in Toronto helped out the singer after his mic died midway through The Star-Spangled Banner. Fans of the Nashville Predators returned the favor the next time the Maple Leafs visited, so we’ll see if the congregation in Anaheim does the same when their series shifts back to the Honda Center.
