The Boston Celtics hosted a 2008 championship reunion on Kevin Garnett’s TNT pre-game show. Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins, Kevin Garnett, Glen Davis, and Paul Pierce shared their thoughts on why Ray Allen was not invited.
Ray Allen will always be remembered as one of the best pure shooters in NBA history. However, he isn’t revered as kindly in Boston according to some of the members of the Boston Celtics 2008 championship team. During the season’s final episode of KG’s Area 21, Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins, Kevin Garnett, Glen Davis, and Paul Pierce gave the audience a brief explanation for why Ray Allen was not welcomed on the show.
For those who aren’t aware of the situation, Ray Allen left Boston in 2012 to join the Miami Heat. At the time, Allen considered the LeBron James Heat squad a better championship contender. Later that season, the Heat dethroned the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Championship series. Allen helped the Heat capture their second title during the LeBron era thanks to a Big 3 by Ray Allen late in Game 7.
That doesn’t mean there wasn’t some bad blood left over in Boston. The Celtics crew expressed that Allen didn’t give them any warning that he planned on leaving the Celtics. Run-ins with Rajon Rondo and a decreased role in favor of Avery Bradley may have signaled the end of Ray Allen’s Celtics tenure.

Rondo, the lone active player from the ’08 Celtics team, was in charge of the invites to the reunion. Interesting in the clip, Rondo did not speak on the situation involving Allen departure from Boston. Kevin Garnett summed up the Ray Allen feud the best way possible.
"“It was more than basketball for us… It felt like a sour breakup.”"
The Celtics get together was a lot of fun to watch at the end of the day. Former Celtics head coach Doc Rivers even made an appearance where they discussed a bunch of fun topics from that memorable season including a proper farewell to Paul Pierce. The 2008 Boston Celtics will always leave their mark on the modern day NBA for becoming the first super team. Thanks to those Celtics, having just one superstar isn’t enough anymore.
