DraftKings Late MLB Picks For May 14

Happy Mother’s Day to all you mothers out there. There will be a lot of pink on display in MLB ballparks today, but let’s try to win those mothers some green!

We have the busiest day of the Major League baseball season with 17 games on tap due to two doubleheaders. Ten games are early, and there are a handful of expensive pitchers. Which ones are worth paying for? Where should we stack with Coors on the late slate? Let’s check some stats!

More from DFS

The money line was a solid 119.45 in the early slate. My lineup made it in easily because of the dominant pitching performances from Matt Moore and Chris Sale. My Toronto stack was enough to put me comfortably in the money.

The winning lineup was all the way down to 184.2. He rolled the dice on Jose Berrios, which turned out well and used the extra cash to stack Red Sox with his Blue Jays for the win.

These picks are based mostly on statistical analysis . If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players. Check out this post from Matt McGarvey for great tips about whether to use a hot player in DFS or not.

DraftKings
May 9, 2017; Baltimore, MD, USA; Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer (31) throws against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Mandatory Credit: Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

P: Max Scherzer ($13,600): It should come as no surprise that the Phillies are only hitting .214 in 173 at bats against the Phillies with 44 strikeouts. The surprising part is that the Phillies have actually scored ten runs off of him. With this being the second game of a doubleheader, their lineup could be even more watered down than usual. Scherzer is worth the extra cash tonight.

P: Ivan Nova ($7,500): This is as much a play against Robbie Ray than anything else. Ray is going to give up a few runs. Nova? Maybe, maybe not. He boasts a 2.23 ERA on the season, and though he doesn’t strike out a lot of batters, he isn’t giving up much for runs. It just gives him a little less margin for error.

C: Tucker Barnhart ($2,300): Devin Mesoraco will likely get the day off, which means that Barnhart should catch today against Jeff Samardzija. Barnhart is hitting a solid .263 this season while filling in for Mesoraco. I like him as a money saving option.

1B: Albert Pujols ($3,500): Pujols is 7-21 with four walks, three doubles, a homer, six runs scored, and two RBI against Verlander in his career. The rest of the team is a dreadful 15-126. Pujols should get some points, but he could be stranded a couple of times.

2B: Starlin Castro ($4,100): Castro is an impressive 12-27(.444) with a double, three homers, and nine RBI already against Charlie Morton. Castro has some of the best past stats going tonight in a homer happy ballpark. Sign me up!

3B: David Freese ($3,200): Lost in the glitz and glamour of Robbie Ray’s strikeout totals is the fact that his ERA is on the wrong side of 4. Right handed hitters with power have been a problem for him, which Freese still has. If he is in the lineup, I like him as a punt option with some upside.

SS: Carlos Correa ($4,800): Correa is 4-9 with two homers, three runs scored, and five RBI already against Masahiro Tanaka. Tanaka has struggled this year, mostly on the road. However, he has surrendered three homers in 19.2 innings at home this year. Correa has a great chance to take him deep tonight.

OF: David Peralta ($4,100): Guess what? Another righty takes the bump for the Pirates. That puts Peralta in play. He has punished Pittsburgh in this series. He should in the series finale as well.

OF: Nomar Mazara ($4,000): The Rangers are pretty expensive even though they have only hit .210 lifetime against Kendall Graveman. Mazara gets the platoon split here and has four straight games with points. He is starting to come around, and I still don’t really trust Graveman’s success.

OF: Matt Joyce ($2,900): Joyce is off to a slow start this year, and he is only 2-9 against A.J. Griffin. Both of those hits are home runs though, and he has scored all three times he has reached base. He also has four RBI and is batting near the top of the Oakland lineup. Joyce is a solid punt play tonight.

DraftKings
May 9, 2017; Phoenix, AZ, USA; Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander throws in the sixth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

P: Justin Verlander ($11,300): Verlander has held the Angels to a .169 average with 33 strikeouts in 130 at bats. They have homered three times, but Pujols is the only one who has had any measure of success against Verlander. The other eight? Not so much….

More from FanSided

P: A.J. Griffin ($8,900): Griffin is coming off of a dominating start, and he has dominated his former team in his career. The A’s are hitting a pathetic .163 in 43 at bats, but they have hit three homers. Somewhat surprising is that Griffin has racked up 15 strikeouts. That should help mitigate the damage if he does give up runs.

C:  Alex Avila ($3,500): Yes, I’m stacking Tigers again tonight against Alex Meyer. Avila continues to feast on right handed pitching. Meyer should be a solid pitcher at some point, but probably not today.

1B: Brandon Belt ($3,700): Tim Adleman gets a huge park upgrade here, but Adleman has been much worse on the road this year. If you want a contrarian stack, take a look at the Giants. Adleman has a dreadful 8.44 ERA on the road this year.

2B: Ian Kinsler ($3,800): Kinsler will be leading off for a team that should score quite a few runs. That’s good enough for me!

3B: Chase Headley ($3,400): Headley is 3-9 with a pair of walks against Charlie Morton. It’s nothing special, but there is little in this price range at third, and Headley has the power to go deep down that very short right field line. Headley is worth a shot at this price.

SS: Jose Iglesias ($2,600): Okay, you got me here. I needed the money to pay for pitching. But that doesn’t mean Iglesias is a terrible option. He has averaged almost six DraftKIngs points per game on the season.

OF: Cody Bellinger ($5,200): Antonio Senzatela has actually been better at home than on the road, but some of that has to do with the quality of opponents. The Dodgers are the toughest team that he has faced at Coors so far, so there could be a few hard hit balls. Bellinger has perhaps the most power on the team. I will take that chance here.

OF: Justin Upton ($4,100): I would rather have J.D. Martinez here, but Upton homered last night too. The Tigers may be taking it slow with Martinez, so I half expect him to get the day off anyway. Upton is a suitable side option, and could outscore Martinez anyway.

OF: Andrew Romine ($3,400): Romine rounds out my Tigers stack. Much like Romine is doing to the Tigers, he is doing the same to me. It’s getting harder to find a reason not to start him at this price with a righty on the mound.
