Yankees pitcher Luis Severino knows he had a bad outing on Sunday and took it out on himself.

New York Yankees pitcher Luis Severino is feeling the opposite of an ego boost right now — an ego slump, if you will — that’s the direct result of his poor form.

Severino put together yet another miserable outing in Sunday’s loss to the Baltimore Orioles. He gave up six runs before recording an out, and when he finally got his first out, striking out No. 7 hitter Ramon Urias, Yankees fans at Camden Yards erupted in sarcastic applause.

No one’s as disappointed in his performance as the righty himself. In Sunday’s 9-3 defeat, Severino allowed 10 hits over 3 1/3 innings and now owns a gaudy 7.49 ERA.

After the game, Severino took on much of the burden of the loss, calling himself “the worst pitcher in the game” and ruing the fact that he’s been struggling to contribute to this team.

As for a slim bit of good news, the Yankees should see Nestor Cortes return from injury soon, and Cortes could force Severino out of the rotation if Severino doesn’t make major improvements.

Yankees pitcher Luis Severino feels horrible after latest loss

The MLB trade deadline will soon be upon New York in a blur: Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET.

Coming off this latest demoralizing defeat to the Orioles and still sitting dead last in the AL East, the Yankees may seriously be considering selling rather than buying to pin their hopes on a more successful 2024 season.

New York lost its chance to improve in the AL wild card standings with the Blue Jays’ loss earlier on Sunday, and the team is currently 3.5 games out of a playoff spot.

Despite the long-anticipated return of Aaron Judge, the Yankees will need more than just the reigning AL MVP to save their shipwrecked season. Severino isn’t the whole problem but is a big part of it, as he has looked awful for the entire month of July. In five starts, he has a ghastly 11.22 ERA and allowed 43 hits and seven homers over 21 2/3 innings.

New York’s starting pitching will likely make or break the team’s upcoming series against the Rays and Astros, two offensive powerhouses in 2023.

It’s fitting that Severino feels like one of the worst pitchers right now, because the Yankees sure look like the worst team in the league.
