Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas reaches out to inevitable, soon-to-be teammate Markelle Fultz. Boston is expected to select Fultz first overall in the 2017 NBA Draft.

Could a bittersweet friendship be brewing in Boston? While Isaiah Thomas is the face of the Boston Celtics franchise at the moment, he has talked with Markelle Fultz about the prospects of joining the gang green. Fultz seems thrilled to have the chance to play with Isaiah in the Celtics backcourt next year.

"“He’s excited,” Thomas said via Chris Forsberg of ESPN. “I mean, he obviously doesn’t know where he’s going, but … he’s excited about the opportunity.”"

Both players are interestingly enough from the University of Washington. While the two players may be best suited for point guard, Thomas thinks the two can co-exist on the floor at the same time. Co-Owner Wyc Grousbeck said that Boston is unlikely to shop the first overall pick making this an inevitable duo.

"“He asks questions; I answer them,” Thomas said. “He’s a good friend of mine. If it happens, we’ll figure out how to play together. If not, we’ll go from there.”"

He’s right. In the modern day NBA, it’s a sort of position-less basketball. Both players can score off the ball and thrive in the pick-and-roll offense. Fultz is also a much bigger guard at 6-foot-4 to go along with a 7-foot wingspan. Those measurables could create an interesting pairing with the undersized Isaiah Thomas.

Celtics general manager Danny Ainge has done a great job building a team in Boston. The influx of young talent puts Thomas in a tough place considering he has just one year remaining on his contract following the conclusion of this season. The plan to target Gordon Hayward this offseason also likely puts the Isaiah contract extension talks on hold. With a ton of young assets to be excited about, Isaiah Thomas probably isn’t worried about what’s going on behind the scenes.
