DraftKingsĀ Early MLB Picks For May 24

We have four early games on getaway day for the early DraftKings tournament. Is it worth paying up for the two better pitchers, or should we see what we can do with the bats? Let’s check out some statistical trends to help us out!

More from DFS

The money line last night was all the way up to 131.25 with all of the offensive outbursts last night. The lineup with Jon Lester missed because I missed with Jesse Hahn. The other lineup was just short. It had 131.25 DraftKings points. That is usually enough.

The winning lineup was actually down a touch to 230.35. He had the pitchers that I did with Clayton Kershaw and German Marquez, but gained separation with two homer nights from Charlie Blackmon and Michael Conforto along with an unlikely homer from Jordy Mercer to take down the tournament.

These picks are based mostly on statistical analysis . If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players. Check out this post from Matt McGarvey for great tips about whether to use a hot player in DFS or not.

P: Marcus Stroman ($10,200): Stroman’s career numbers against the Brewers aren’t great, but he has held them to five runs in 44 at bats despite the .295 batting average. Stroman easily has the highest overall upside and strikeout upside on the slate today. The Brewers are all-or-nothing, and with Eric Thames cooled off, it is much more likely that they get nothing against Stroman. He has a 3.00 ERA in nine starts this year.

P:Ā Jose BerriosĀ ($7,400): Berrios has been dominant in his return to the majors. After a rough rookie campaign, he has 65.2 DraftKings points over his two starts this year. And it’s not like they have come against the Royals or Padres. It came against the Indians in Cleveland and Colorado at Target Field. The Orioles were dominated by Ervin Santana last night. The way that Berrios is pitching right now, he may be able to do the same.

C: Omar Navarez ($2,800): My favorite stack of the day is brought to you by Randall Delgadoā€˜s return to the rotation. He has a 4.05 ERA in 15 relief appearances this year, so he has been serviceable. Delgado also has a 3.72 ERA in 203.1 innings pitched at Chase Field in his career. That said, I don’t see him going deep into this game, and the Sox offense is starting to come around. As far as Navarez goes, He is just someone I know will start the afternoon game. I’m not expecting great things.

1B:Ā Jose AbreuĀ ($4,900): Abreu is starting to come around. He has only been held scoreless once in the last two weeks, and there is potential for him to have a big game against Arizona in a hitter’s park, even with the roof closed.

2B: Jonathan Villar ($4,500): Forgive my Brewer in the lineup against Stroman. It’s not like he is going to pitch a shutout, after all. Villar is 2-4 with a solo homer against Stroman. If he does it again, I want that 14 points to help offset the negative done to my pitcher!

3B:Ā Miguel SanoĀ ($4,900): Sano is hitting everything in sight lately. He boasts a .359 average with two homers and eight RBI, which comes out to a cool 10 DraftKings points per game. Chris Tillman is off to a good start of his own, but Sano is one of the most dangerous hitters available today.

SS:Ā Chad PinderĀ ($2,700): Pinder was not in the lineup last night, which bodes well for today’s availability against Edinson Volquez. Pinder has never faced Volquez, but he does boast a 1.357 OPS in 27 plate appearances against right handed pitching. The four homers help, but four homers in 27 at bats is worth taking a stab at with this low of a price tag attached to it.

OF: Max Kepler ($4,600): Kepler has also been swinging a hot bat lately. He has 111 DraftKings points in his last eight games, including a monster game in Baltimore in the series opener. I’m going to ride him while he’s hot!

OF: Khris Davis ($4,200): I don’t trust Edinson Volquez, and Davis’s price is still depressed because of a lengthy slump, but he does have three homers this week. He is starting to come around again, and can go off at any time.

OF: Melky Cabrera ($3,900): Melky turned in his third double digit DraftKings points effort last night after originally being scheduled for a night off against lefty Patrick Corbin. Be ready to switch just in case he gets the day off, but considering he is busting out of his slump, I think the Sox will want to keep him in there.
