New York Knicks point guard Derrick Rose is scheduled to be a free agent this offseason. The San Antonio Spurs and the Minnesota Timberwolves may make Rose a target.

The saga of Derrick Rose could make another twist this summer. The 2011 NBA MVP has been a decent player but far from the elite guard he once was pre-injuries. Rose, who signed with the Knicks this past summer, enjoyed a fairly good season in New York. He averaged 18 points on 47 percent shooting, his best percentage since 2010. But he only showed flashes of the player he was in 2011, never consistently. Unless the Knicks offers Rose a max contract, he will be primed to choose which team he wants to play for.

So far, it appears the Minnesota Timberwolves have him on top of their priority list, according to a report at ESPN.

"The Minnesota Timberwolves view Derrick Rose as a potential free-agent target this summer, league sources told ESPN.Rose, 28, will be a free agent for the first time in his career after spending last season with the New York Knicks.Rose averaged 18 points, 4.4 assists and 3.8 rebounds in 64 games for New York, which finished the season a disappointing 31-51."

Also, the San Antonio Spurs may attempt to woo Rose. But how the free agent market sways will be the main factor.

"Some rival executives believe the San Antonio Spurs may have interest in Rose, depending on how the free-agent market for point guards develops."

In theory, the Timberwolves would be a good fit for Rose. Pairing with Zach Lavine, Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins would let Rose take a back seat and do less. Rose’s former head coach Tom Thibodeau is there, too, so that could be a draw. Whether Rose is ready to transition to the player Spurs head coach Greg Popovich wants, will perhaps be the deciding factor, since chasing a ring in San Antonio might be the most appealing path.
