Jed Lowrie is on fire right now for the A’s. But, can fantasy owners now make Oakland’s second baseman a must-add off the waiver wire?

The Oakland A’s may sit four games under .500, but they do not lack their fair share of intriguing players. While Yonder Alonso all of sudden wants to hit for power and a guy like Khris Davis remains one of the most underrated players in the game, Jed Lowrie has quietly gotten off to one of the best starts of his career. Can fantasy owners make him a waiver wire add though?

Jed Lowrie is amazingly 33-years-old now, and 2017 marks his tenth year as a big leaguer. The story with Lowrie is well documented. The super-utilityman has always had the talent to be a quality producer but injuries have ruined any chance at him sustaining that during his career. He has only played in more than 130 games twice overt that span.

In terms of his fantasy value for just this season, owners can not just use his prior shortcomings to dictate their decision. While injuries are still a high risk with him, he is currently on a tear at the plate. Over 44 games this season,  he has a .283/6 HR/13 RBI/28 R/.819 OPS line.  Over the last seven games, it is hard to find a hotter hitter at the plate, as he has posted a .448/2 HR/6 RBI/1.260 OPS line.

Looking deeper into his batted ball profile, there are more positives.  He is maintaining a 9% BB rate, but pairing that with a solid 15% K rate. He has also posted 23% LD, 30% GB,47% FB, 50% Med and 39% Hard contact rates as well. Lowrie is currently making a ton of hard contact while dropping his GB rate by 3% and increasing his FB rate by 2%. Like his teammate Alonso, the uptick in their FB rate is paying huge dividends.

His best season as a major leaguer was with the A’s in 2013 where he posted a .290/15 HR/75 RBI line. Based on his start this season, he looks bound to match that line at the very least. If his health can hold up, Lowrie looks to be a great add off the wire moving forward, especially those looking for better numbers from the MI spot in their lineup.

Fantasy owners are well aware of the pitfalls when adding Lowrie. But, with his great start at the plate and his spot in a solid top of the Oakland order, owners can roll the dice on him once again. Make the move.
