Indianapolis 500 starting grid: Starting lineup for Indy 500
What is the starting grid for the Indianapolis 500? We give you the starting lineup for the 2017 Indy 500 from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The Indy 500 starting lineup for the 101st running of America’s biggest motor sports race is as impressive as the event demands. All of IndyCar’s biggest names will be accounted for on Sunday in the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Scott Dixon, the 2008 Indianapolis 500 champion, will lead the field to the green flag after posting the fastest time in qualifying. Last year’s Indy 500 winner Alexander Rossi starts third. Tony Kanaan is beginning the race seventh and Ryan Hunter-Reay starts tenth, putting four past Indianapolis 500 victors within the Top 10 in 2017.
A pair of past Indy 500 winners will begin together in the middle of the pack. Two-time winner Juan Pablo Montoya starts 18th, with three-time Indianapolis 500 title holder Helio Castroneves behind him in 19th. Last year’s pole sitter James Hinchcliffe is just ahead of the two Team Penske drivers in 17th position.
Carlos Munoz lost the 2016 Indianapolis 500 in heartbreaking fashion, making it the second time the Colombian has been runner-up in IndyCar’s biggest race. He’ll be aiming to avenge that result but will have far to go as he’s starting back in 25th. But that just goes to show the depth of the starting grid for the 2017 Indy 500—there are contenders no matter where you look.
