DraftKings Early MLB Picks For June 15

There are only three games in the early DraftKings tournament today. Picking the stacks will be easier than picking the pitchers. Who will hurt us the least? Can we really trust Rich Hill? Let’s check some stats!

More from DFS

The money line in the early tournament yesterday was one of the lowest of the year at 84.05. My lineup came in at 83.1. I blame Johnny Cueto. Who could have seen the Royals beating him up like they did?

The winning lineup was predictably down to 177.7 DraftKings points. He took the huge risk on Julio Teheran with Jhoulys Chacin, and it paid off big. He also stacked Braves where most of us stacked Nationals.

These picks are based mostly on statistical analysis . If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players. Check out this post from Matt McGarvey for great tips about whether to use a hot player in DFS or not.

P: Jose Berrios ($8,800): Were you one of the ones that picked up Berrios last season when he got called up? I was too. Of course, I’m a Twins fan. I’ve been waiting for him. He wasn’t ready last year. This year has been a completely different story. He has five quality starts in six tries. He has 39 strikeouts in 38 innings. Berrios also has a 2.84 ERA on the road and at home. He has been solid wherever he has pitched this year. The Twins are Mariners are taking batting practice and keeping score in the first three games of the series. The finale should be different with arguably the two best pitchers on the early slate taking the hill today.

P: Ariel Miranda ($7,400): The Twins hit two solo homers against Miranda in his only career start against him, but we can live with that. The glaring thing is that he didn’t strike out a single batter. Miranda has been noticeably worse on the road this year, but this incarnation of the Twins isn’t dominating lefties like they did a year or two ago. Much of that has to do with the prolonged slump of Brian Dozier. At any rate, I expect a low scoring affair at Target Field today. That’s enough for me to take both pitchers and hope for the best. The other two could get out of hand.

C: Caleb Joseph ($2,400): Joseph has been hitting so well that the Orioles have been slotting him or Welington Castillo at DH. Expect Joseph to be in the lineup in some capacity today, which is good news since he shows a little more power against left handed pitching. And he comes at a great bargain, enabling us to stack against Josh Tomlin.

1B: Cody Bellinger ($5,300): Did I mention Josh Tomlin? He has always been a fly ball pitcher, and he is bound to see an adjustment back closer to his career rates, but right now, he is giving up home runs at an alarming rate. He has already surrendered seven homers in just 34.2 home innings with a 6.49 ERA. All Dodgers are in play this afternoon, especially those with power. Bellinger leads the majors in home runs since April 25th, so he definitely fits the bill.

2B: Chris Taylor ($4,400): Taylor will likely lead off again for an offense that should score a bunch of runs. I want him in my stack against a pitcher with a 6.49 ERA at home.

3B: Miguel Sano ($4,400): Sano owns one of the solo homers against Ariel Miranda, and he is cheaper than the slumping Manny Machado. I like Machado today against a rookie left hander, but I also need the extra $400 elsewhere in my lineup.

SS: Corey Seager ($4,900): Seager is another left handed hitter with power, which means he is a great play against Tomlin here. The Dodgers lose a little bit without Adrian Gonzalez, but this team is built to handle an injury or two. They have plenty of bats available to exploit this matchup.

OF: Mark Trumbo ($4,400): Trumbo has yet to really hit his power stride this year, which is keeping his price on the affordable side. This is the most expensive he has been in quite some time, and with good reason. David Holmberg has pitched well so far, and held his own in his first start of the season at Cleveland over the weekend. The Orioles offense has been quiet lately, so there is a chance that Holmberg keeps up his strong pitching. I do want a couple of Orioles righties in here just in case though.

OF: Trey Mancini ($4,100): Mancini has cooled off some against lefties, but he is still hitting .282 with four homers and 12 RBI in 78 at bats against southpaws. Mancini could be a solid bargain this afternoon.

OF: Melky Cabrera ($3,900): Melky is 11-29(379) with a walk, three doubles, a homer, four runs scored, and seven RBI in his career against Chris Tillman. He looks like one of the better bargains around with this kind of career numbers. Tillman has an ugly 8.01 ERA this year. Choosing to stack White Sox could be a fruitful endeavor today. Just be aware that Tillman had his best game of the season against the White Sox back on May 7th. He didn’t allow a run in five innings.
