After 18 holes at Erin Hills for the first round of the 2017 U.S. Open, where did 2015 U.S. Open champion Jordan Spieth land on the leaderboard?

Jordan Spieth had a rough go-around in his title defense at the 2016 U.S. Open Championship by finishing tied for 37th at Oakmont, while Dustin Johnson, the runner-up to Spieth in 2015, won his first career major.

Spieth entered this year’s U.S. Open not having won a major tournament on tour since his 2015 victory. Through the first couple of holes, it appeared that Spieth was on his way to a solid round during Thursday’s first round action at Erin Hills in Wisconsin.

Unfortunately for Spieth, some other names set quite a pace in the morning groupings and without any key strokes picked up throughout his round, Spieth struggled. The driver was once again an issue, as the former U.S. Open champion found himself in tough positions off his tee shots, but he still was able to scramble for some opportunities that just didn’t fall.

Spieth finished +1 overall with a 73 that has him eight shots off the 65 that Rickie Fowler shot right out of the gate in one of the morning groups. That 73 isn’t a good sign for Spieth, especially with his past history in major tournaments.

With Spieth’s round in the books, let’s take a look at the leaderboard after the opening round at Erin Hills, including where Spieth is compared to some of the other names out there.

2017 U.S. Open leaderboard after 18 holes:

1. Rickie Fowler: -7 (65)

T-2. Paul Casey: -6 (66)

T-2. Xander Schauffele: -6 (66)

T-4. Brian Harman: -5 (67)

T-4. Tommy Fleetwood: -5 (67)

T-4. Brooks Koepka: -5 (67)

T-7. Adam Hadwin: -4 (68)

T-7. Marc Leishman: -4 (68)

T-7. Patrick Reed: -4 (68)

T-7. Kevin Na: -4 (68)

T-63. Jordan Spieth: +1 (73)

Spieth still has Friday to stay above the cut line and make a run this weekend, but he’s got some work left to get back into the hunt at Erin Hills.
