Recapping Jordan Spieth’s tough opening round of the 2017 U.S. Open from Erin Hills in Wisconsin.

As arguably the world’s best golfer, Jordan Spieth will enter any major tournament as one of the favorites, but didn’t live up to that billing in the first round of the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills by shooting a 73.

The 2015 U.S. Open champion looked to get off to a good start after struggling in his opening round at the 2017 Masters back in early April. After making par on the first hole of the morning, Spieth hit a terrific approach shot on the Par-4 11th and sunk a birdie putt to move to -1.

Shockingly, that would be Spieth’s final birdie of the day in one of the worst U.S. Open rounds of his career, as he reeled off a string of 10 straight pars, While Spieth played well off the tee early on, the two-time major winner missed a number of short putts to prevent him from moving further up the leaderboard.

A short three-foot gimme on the difficult par-5 18th hurt in particular, as Spieth hovered just outside the top 10 for much of Thursday’s action. Things got worse when Spieth slipped back to even on the long par-4 4th with a bogey.

Leaving those birdies out on the course during his opening nine hurt, as Spieth turned in another bogey on the par-4 5th after hitting his second shot went wayward into the bunker. Spieth managed to save par on the remaining four holes to finish his day at +1 with a 73, but has a lot of work to do buried in 53rd place, eight shots behind current leader Rickie Fowler.
