DraftKings Late MLB Picks For July 1

Seven of the season high 17 games are in the main DraftKings tournament tonight. We don’t have the star power at pitcher that the early slate had, but Grienke is still out there. Should we use him, or can we pivot to a cheaper starter? Let’s check some stats!

More from DFS

NOTE: the postponement of the Tigers-Indians game last night has Carrasco and Zimmerman as the starters in the second game of the doubleheader, but they are not in the DraftKings queue yet. These lineups are built without those two pitchers in since I don’t know if it will be fixed by tomorrow.

These picks are based mostly on statistical analysis . If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players. Check out this post from Matt McGarvey for great tips about whether to use a hot player in DFS or not.

LOS ANGELES, CA – JUNE 24: Tyler Chatwood #32 of the Colorado Rockies throws a pitch in the second inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on June 24, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)

P: Tyler Chatwood ($8,000): You may notice the absence of Greinke. You also notice that I am using his mound opponent. What gives? Well, Chatwood still has the second best road ERA since the start of last year. Only some guy named Kershaw is better. Here is the kicker though. Chatwood racked up more DraftKings points in his start against the Diamondbacks than Greinke did in either start against the Rockies. I am taking the road less traveled so I can stack against Nolasco.

P: Sam Gaviglio ($7,200): Gaviglio has never faced the Angels, but this isn’t a big park downgrade, and Gaviglio has pitched his way to an impressive 3.38 ERA in eight starts. He doesn’t miss a lot of bats, but the Angels have cooled off again. Gaviglio could be a sneaky source of good points tonight.

C: Mike Zunino ($3,600): Zunino is 4-10 with a walk, a double, a solo homer, and two runs scored against Ricky Nolasco. This is a great night to stack Mariners considering they are still cheaper than Astros, and they are hitting .312 in 144 career at bats against Nolasco.

1B: Edwin Encarnacion ($5,000): It looks as though Jordan Zimmerman will start the nightcap. I would rather stack Mariners against Nolasco than Indians against the improving Zimmerman, but Edwin is still the best at first base with lefty Clayton Richard on the mound for the Padres. That could help neutralize both Bellinger and Corey Seager, so I went elsewhere instead.

2B: Robinson Cano ($5,000): Cano is 7-17(.412) with four walks, a double, three homers, four runs scored, and four RBI in his career against Ricky Nolasco. He is one of the featured parts of this stack, and is definitely worth paying the premium for tonight.

3B: Jedd Gyorko ($4,200): For all the success that Gio Gonzalez has had this year, he is still prone to allowing big hits to right handed power. Gyorko is 3-9 with two walks, a solo homer, and two runs scored against Gio in his career. It’s a toss up between Gyorko and Kyle Seager, but I want some exposure to Gonzalez just in case.

SS: Jean Segura ($4,700): Segura is 5-15 with a homer, three runs scored, and two RBI against Nolasco. He will be at or near the top ofĀ a lineup that should score a lot of runs tonight, I definitely want Segura in there as well.

OF: Nelson Cruz ($4,700): Cruz is 7-21 with a walk, a double, three homers, five runs scored, and five RBI against Nolasco. There is no better way to top a stack than with the Boomstick.

OF: Randal Grichuk ($4,000): Grichuk is back, and he is mad! He must really have something against Major League baseballs since he has sent three of them into the stands in six games since being recalled from AAA. He is also 2-6 with a double, a homer, and two RBI in his career against Gio Gonzalez. This is the prime time to use Grichuk!

OF: Max Kepler ($3,400): It appears as though Jason Hammel will start the night part of the doubleheader now. Hopefully Kepler plays both games since he is 3-4 with a double, a walk, a run scored, and a RBI against Hammel in his career. He could be a nice value for the price.
