Fantasy Baseball: Giants Denard Span getting it done at the plate
By Brad Kelly
Denard Span is on fire at the plate for the Giants. But, is the veteran doing enough to now be a waiver wire add?
The Giants are a bad baseball team. The offense has been putrid and the pitching has not been all that better. But, one player that has did his best to give the team a much needed spark lately, is Denard Span. The grizzled veteran has been around for 10 years now, and while the glory days may be behind him, he is of a roll at the plate currently.
But, is he worth a waiver wire add?
Span currently holds a .287/4 HR/17 RBI/3 SB/28 R/.770 OPS line over 57 games this season. He is no stranger to injuries, he hit the DL in late April due to a shoulder ailment, and returned in the middle of the May. The supporting cast is not the greatest which hinders his counting stat totals, yet his recent stretch over the last two weeks should get fantasy owners attention.

He has posed a .383/1 HR/5 RBI/10 R/2 SB/1.0827 OPS line over that span, notching a total of 18 hits. He has multiple hits in six of the last eight games he has played, further showing that it is hard to find anyone hotter at the plate right now. Span is the catalyst of the Giants’ offense as he has to get in order for Buster Posey and Hunter Pence to have RBI chances.
He does not run at the clip that owners would hope, but when he is notching hits like he is right now, it is hard to not add him. Span can offer R/AVG help right now, which are stats nonetheless. He does not move the needle in terms of offering owners championships, but he can offer those solid statlines that wins owners their matchups.
Another positive not about Span’s season, is that he is hitting lefties better than righties this season. While he has not homered off a lefty yet this season, he is batting a cool .292 agasint them over 48 at bats. Against RHP he is not too shabby, posting a .286/4 HR/15 RBI line against them.

Denard Span is by no means a needle pusher, but he is hot as can be at the plate and offers just enough to be a waiver wire add. Do not feel any shame in adding the old man yet again.
