DraftKings Early MLB Picks For July 20

Four of the nine games on getaway day are in the early DraftKings tournament. We have a lot of price inflation for the short slate across the board, so who is the least inflated of these prices? Are there any bargains to be found? Who are the safest pitchers? Let’s check some stats!

More from DFS

The money line yesterday was pretty high for a short slate at 144.6. My mini Rockies stack made it in despite average pitching numbers. The other missed because I didn’t have Nolan Arenado in that one.

The winning lineup was up at 232.85. He gambled with Jose Berrios against the Yankees and stacked Phillies and Rockies to take home the prize.

These picks are based mostly on statistical analysis . If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players. Check out this post from Matt McGarvey for great tips about whether to use a hot player in DFS or not.

PITTSBURGH, PA – JULY 15: Jameson Taillon #50 of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches in the first inning during the game against the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park on July 15, 2017 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Justin K. Aller/Getty Images) /

P: Jameson Taillon ($9,600): The only Brewer with any kind of success against Jameson Taillon in his career is Hernan Perez, and he has had trouble sticking in the lineup this year. This is a different year, and a different Taillon than last year. There is a distinct risk/reward involved in playing a pitcher against the Brewers, but I much prefer Taillon for $2,100 less than Jimmy Nelson. The Pirates have 17 runs against Nelson in only 143 at bats with only 25 strikeouts.

P: Luis Castillo ($6,900): Castillo’s numbers are solid, much more solid than the price would indicate. He dominated the Diamondbacks in the desert just before the break, giving up just three hits and a walk in 6.2 innings to go with eight strikeouts. Arizona added more power in J.D. Martinez, but can he make that much of a difference against Castillo? I’m not convinced. Castillo looks like a great bargain if you can stomach using him against one of the best offenses in the National League.

C: Devin Mesoraco ($2,800): Mesoraco was on the DL when Taijuan Walker faced the Reds before the break. Mesoraco was activated, but did not start yesterday. It seems fair to assume that he will be in the lineup today and chomping at the bit to get a piece of the guy who gave up five runs to the Reds two weeks ago.

1B: Kendrys Morales ($3,900): Rarely has a Blue Jays stack gone as planned this season, but Boston is rolling the corpse of Doug Fister, complete with his 6.75 ERA, out to the mound again. This looks like the safest stack of the day. Morales is 8-25(.320) with three doubles, three homers, six runs scored, and five RBI in his career against Fister. This looks like a great place to start!

2B: Scooter Gennett ($4,300): Gennett hit a solo homer in his two at bats against Walker in that game. Overall, he has smacked four homers and driven in 12 over his last ten games. Gennett is rolling, and is still at a reasonable price. I see no reason not to use him.

3B: Josh Donaldson ($5,000): Donaldson is 4-6 with a walk, two doubles, four runs scored and a RBI against Fister. I could see him reaching base a couple more times today, and maybe even getting that elusive home run against Fister. Fister has allowed three of them in 17.2 innings pitched.

SS: Paul DeJong ($3,700): DeJong’s price is finally starting to reflect what he has done at the plate lately. He is hitting .405 with four homers and six RBI over the last ten games. Few pitchers have been able to get him out, so why would we think that Seth Lugo could? DeJong looks in good shape to keep his hot streak going.

OF: Jose Bautista ($4,900): Bautista is 7-17(.412) with four walks, three doubles, five runs scored, and two RBI in his career against Fister. The big bats in Toronto should be primed for a big day. They have all done well against Fister in their careers.

OF: Andrew McCutchen ($4,400): Surprisingly, McCutchen is the only Pirate that has taken Jimmy Nelson deep. He is 6-19(.316) with five walks, two doubles, that homer, three runs scored, and three RBI against Nelson, yet he is $500 cheaper than yesterday. I’ll take it!

OF: Jay Bruce ($4,300): Bruce is 15-36(.417) with three walks, a double, two triples, three homers, five runs scored, and an impressive 11 RBI in his career against Lance Lynn. The Mets have had issues scoring runs against St Louis, but Lynn’s ERA is 1.3 runs higher on the road.
