OAKLAND, CA - JUNE 11: Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving told Drama about his plans for a “self-sustaining village” on a recent episode of Drama’s podcast.

Kyrie Irving, quiet and focused on the court for the three-time East Champion Cleveland Cavaliers, is becoming known for his spacious considerations outside the world of the NBA. The latest quote from Irving, from an interview on Drama’s “Short Story Long” podcast, involves his hope of running a self-sustaining community one day.

Compared with the discussion he generated earlier in the year when he argued that the Earth might be flat, the desire to organize a small community is pretty tame. He told Drama that the idea would center around a massive plot of land, owned by Irving, on which the members of the community would grow and farm their own food, sustaining themselves nutritionally and putting them on a more equal playing field in terms of opportunity.

Irving frequently mentions the concept of “paying to play” in the podcast, which seemingly refers to the disadvantage people who have less money face. By creating an eco-village like the one he hopes to manage, Irving hopes to over come the “separate class” that economically weaker populations face.

The 2017 All-Star has earned dozens of headlines this week apart from his utopian dreams, after telling Sports Illustrated that the Cavaliers are in a “peculiar place.” The question simply referred to LeBron James’s frustration with the Cavs’ quiet offseason, and Irving took the answer so far as to call the team’s position “peculiar.” Combined with his statement earlier in the offseason in which he said that he would want out of Cleveland when and if James left, it’s a hectic time for Cleveland.

Perhaps it makes sense after all that Irving would be looking toward his career after basketball. If James does indeed leave, Irving’s best chance at serenity might just be to buy that big plot of land and get to farming.
