Of course, he was only at Duke for one year, and thus probably didn’t take too many science courses.

While sports fans have a natural tendency to look up to athletes due to their performances, every now and then they say things that remind you they’re really just people, and thus prone to some weird beliefs just like the rest of us. And then there’s whatever Kyrie Irving just said.

On his recent appearance on the Road Trippin’ podcast with Cleveland Cavaliers teammates Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye, the talk turned to conspiracy theories and the like. And apparently, Irving thinks that the shape of the Earth falls under that umbrella.

That’s enough to raise an eyebrow on its own, but as Yahoo Sports transcribed it, Irving’s explanation truly is almost beyond belief.

"“For what I’ve known for many years and what I’ve been taught is that the Earth is round, but if you really think about it from a landscape of the way we travel, the way we move and the fact that — can you really think of us rotating around the sun, and all planets align, rotating in specific dates, being perpendicular with what’s going on with these ‘planets’ and stuff like this.“Everything that they send [to space] doesn’t come back. It doesn’t come back. There is no concrete information, except for the information that they’re giving us. They’re particularly putting you in the direction of what to believe and what not to believe, and the truth is right there. You’ve just got to go searching for it. I’ve been searching for it for a while.”"

Uh, wow. It’s definitely a very “of the moment” philosophy, as people seem to want to believe what they want at this moment in history, evidence to the contrary be damned. Except there’s that whole thing about nothing coming back from space, which is not true.

But again, even though he’s got superhuman handles and an incredible sense of the moment while playing basketball, Irving is only human. You do you, Kyrie. Don’t let the round Earth truthers get you down.
