Fantasy Baseball: Will The White Sox Give Ryan Cordell A Chance?
All-around prospect Ryan Cordell is on the move once again in a deadline deal this year. Last year he was traded to Milwaukee as part of the Jonathan Lucroy deal. What did he fetch this year? Here is the deal:
On the surface, this may appear an insignificant trade in the fantasy world. Anthony Swarzak is having a great year in the White Sox bullpen, but he didn’t do much on the fantasy landscape in leagues that don’t count holds. That likely wont change, except for the fact that Swarzak may see more holds with a winning team. He isn’t going to unseat Corey Knebel as the closer anytime soon. However, if Knebel gets hurt, Swarzak may be the first in line.
Swarzak posted a 2.23 ERA in 41 appearances with the White Sox with 52 strikeouts in 48.1 innings pitched. He will have a great impact on the Milwaukee bullpen, but not on the fantasy landscape. That impact could be made by the player going the other way.

Cordell is regarded highly as a prospect because he can hit for power and steal bases. He was hitting .284 with ten homers and nine steals in 68 games for AAA Colorado Springs this year. With Avisail Garcia landing on the disabled list today, Cordell could finally make that elusive jump to the majors.
In the Texas system, the outfield was crowded, especially after Jurickson Profar moved out there. Then in Milwaukee, Domingo Santana and Lewis Brinson were up before him. As we can see, it wasn’t because he couldn’t handle AAA pitching.
The White Sox have nothing to lose, so with Garcia out, we could finally see Cordell get his chance. If he does, he is worth a look in deeper leagues if you need some help in any category. Cordell isn’t going to be a monster in any one place, but he could be a lot like a Melky Cabrera type and give you solid production across the board.
