Christian Yelich flashes his glove and bat

Miami Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich made an incredible diving grab and hit a home run in the same inning against the Washington Nationals.

Is it possible for a player to own an inning? If so, Christian Yelich owned the fifth inning during the Marlins and Nationals game Wednesday evening. Yelich made an amazing diving grab to rob Anthony Rendon of a hit, and then smashed a home run to center field in the bottom of the fifth inning for good measure.

As the Marlins’ official twitter account emphatically mentioned above, that is exactly why he is a Gold Glover and a Silver Slugger. Yelich won a Gold Glove in 2014 and has always been known for having the ability to make impressive snags like this, but Yelich grew into his power just last season. He clubbed a career-high 21 home runs in 2016 and hit for a .298 average, which earned him his first Silver Slugger.

He is also on track to put up a similar number of home runs this season, with his batting average remaining in the .284 to .288 range. It’s impressive to see a hitter start to hit for power without sacrificing much average. Yelich is also capable of stealing bases, making him one of the few five-tool players in the majors today.

Yelich is also only 25 years old and is just entering his prime years. He has steadily made progress in his first five years in the majors, and has shown no signs of not being able to continue that trend. Marlins fans have certainly enjoyed watching Yelich grow as a player over the years, and they hope that he can one day help them end their long-lasting playoff drought that has been ongoing since the 2003 season.
