Padres Cory Spangenberg keeps on hitting: Waiver wire add?
By Brad Kelly
Cory Spangenberg is on a tear at the plate for the Padres. Now hot for nearly two whole months, is he worth a waiver wire add?
Expectations for the Padres were not exactly high entering the 2017 season. The team is in the middle of a full rebuild and their 48-59 speaks to that. But, they do have their fair share of intriguing fantasy pieces. One player that is on a tear as of late, Cory Spangenberg.
Spangenberg was San Diego’s first round pick in 2011. The 26-year-old never hit the ceiling that some hoped for but over the last two months, he has hit like a man possessed.
After taking over at third for the demoted Ryan Schimpf, Spangenberg has taken off. He holds a .272/8 HR/31 RBI/6 SB/.729 OPS line on the season, doing most of his damage when the weather heated up.

Spangenberg has posted at least a .299/3 HR/9 HR/.812 line per month over June and July. He has swung the bat well, and even though the power has been a welcome addition to his game, the production has been there for fantasy owners.
He is hitting near the top of the order as well, so it is easy to see why the counting stats are building. Looking further into his batted ball data, he has amassed impressive 22%, 58% Med and 28% Hard contact rates.
Spangenberg’s ability to consistently square the ball up is doing wonders, and that is evident through his stats. His eight homers this season are already a career high, so he will surpass that. There is more room for him to steal too, he had 25 steals with the Padres in 2015, so his total of six is bound to climb.
Therefore, Spangenberg should be able to post a solid AVG while posting close to a 15 HR/15 SB line the rest of the way. Double digit category producers are rare to find anymore, making Spangenberg all the more appealing. The weak Padres’ lineup hinders his value some but he is producing enough to offset the loss.

Cory Spangenberg also offers multi-eligibility as well, all the more reason for fantasy owners to gravitate towards him. His best fantasy position will be as an MI or UTIL add, as his skill set the rest of the way gives owners an advantage if he can start running more frequently.
Make the move.
