DraftKings Late MLB Picks For August 5

We are back up to three afternoon games today. Yesterday’s early slate makes this one look like the All Star game. Is it another day to stack bats and hope for the best, or should we pay up for a couple of arms? Let’s check out some stats!

More from DFS

The money line last night was down a bit to 104.8. Both of my lineups fell short. One was due to a failed Rangers stack. The other was done in by a subpar Red Sox stack.

The winning lineup was a little below average at 183.6 DraftKings points. He struck gold with Mike Foltynewicz and his hybrid Orioles/Braves stack.

These picks are based mostly on statistical analysis . If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players. Check out this post from Matt McGarvey for great tips about whether to use a hot player in DFS or not.

OAKLAND, CA – AUGUST 01: Sean Manaea #55 of the Oakland Athletics pitches against the San Francisco Giants in the top of the first inning at Oakland Alameda Coliseum on August 1, 2017 in Oakland, California. (Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images) /

P: Sean Manaea ($7,700): The Angels are only hitting .250 in 56 at bats against Manaea with one homer and six runs. Manaea has only picked up six strikeouts, but he could record a lot of outs at a reasonable price. Hyun-Jin Ryu is the highest priced option, but the Mets have hit four homers off of him in just 47 at bats. The next best option is the extraordinarily inconsistent Jeff Samardzija. Does Manaea look safe yet?

P: Aaron Nola ($6,200): This marks the fourth consecutive day that I have taken a pitcher at Coors Field. This time, however, I am taking the visitor. Nola has turned in eight straight quality starts, so he is really cruising right now. Coors may provide a speed bump, but I still expect a strong start from Nola. Definitely well above what his price indicates.

C: Cameron Rupp (4,800): I am going to know whether this lineup is going to place or not early on because I have a lot of Phillies in here. Why? Coors Field of course! But on top of that, Jeff Hoffman has been awful at home. Hoffman has a 7.04 ERA in seven home starts, and a dismal 6.42 in his last ten starts. The Phillies offense is not great, but they are much better than they were even a month ago. They are growing up together, which has really helped them. Rupp got the night off last night, so I’m willing to pay up for him here.

1B: Tommy Joseph ($4,400): Joseph has a lot of power, but he doesn’t get on base a lot. This is a power play at Coors Field against a struggling pitcher. Don’t tell me you haven’t done the same at some point.

2B: Cesar Hernandez ($5,000): Hernandez is leading off for a Phillies offense that is projected to score the most runs of the day. You bet I want him in my stack!

3B: Justin Turner ($3,600): How in the world is Turner this cheap? He is not facing the Steven Matz of 2016. This is the 2017 version. You know, the one with the 5.50 ERA. The one with a 6.68 ERA in his last ten starts. If that isn’t bad enough, Matz tips the scales with a 9.69 ERA in 13 home innings this year. Turner is 2-9 with a solo homer and two runs scored in his career against Matz. He looks like a bargain for this price.

SS: Enrique Hernandez ($3,500): Kike still hits lefties very well. Especially lefties that are struggling the way Matz is. Hernandez is the only other Dodger to hit a homer against Matz in his career. Don’t be shocked if it happens again!

OF: Mike Trout ($5,500): Yes, I am using a hitter against my pitcher, but that said pitcher is the reason I can afford Trout at all. Trout is 4-8 with two walks, a homer and two RBI in his career against Manaea. I know Manaea isn’t going to blank the Angels, and Trout is the most likely to be the reason why.

OF: Odubel Herrera ($4,700): We knew that Herrera wasn’t nearly as bad as he was at the start of the season. He has raised his average all the way to .278. He is hitting .314 with two homers and five RBI in the last ten games. Coors Field will also help magnify his power.

OF: Nick Williams ($4,600): Williams has hit his way into the cleanup spot against right handed pitching. The rookie is on a tear lately as well, putting up 41 DraftKings points over his last three games. Expect another good total from him against the struggling Hoffman.
